Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Six months later.

The spring sun was warm over the Oakridge farmers' market. My small wooden booth, titled Frank & Ranger's Leatherworks, was bustling with customers. On the table were handmade belts, bags, and custom dog collars—stitched by hand using the tools Grandpa had left me.

Beside my booth, resting comfortably on a plush orthopedic bed under a shaded canopy, was Ranger. He had gained weight, his coat was shiny, and he had become the town's unofficial mascot. Children lined up just to pet the old hound, and he greeted every single one with a gentle wag of his tail.

Across the market, I saw a familiar face walking toward me—David, the young local veterinarian who had helped treat Ranger's arthritis over the winter. He was carrying two iced coffees and a small paper bag from the bakery.

"How's the grand old man doing today?" David asked with a warm smile, handing me a coffee and tossing a healthy liver treat to Ranger, who caught it effortlessly.

"He's king of the market," I laughed. "I think people only buy my bags so they have an excuse to talk to him."

"Can you blame them?" David sat on the wooden bench beside my table. "So, are we still on for the hike by the lake this evening? Ranger promised he'd show me the best fishing spot your grandfather taught him."

I looked at David, then down at Ranger, who was currently receiving chin scratches from a little girl in pink boots.

For three years, I had thought my life was on hold—that I was losing my youth in a quiet house full of medicine and silence. But sitting here now, under the bright blue sky, surrounded by community, love, and the legacy of the man who raised me, I realized my life hadn't been delayed at all.

It had simply been waiting for me to find where I truly belonged.

I reached down, resting my hand on Ranger's thick leather collar.

"We wouldn't miss it for the world," I smiled.
