Chapter 9 - The Return to Greystone

The autumn twilight had settled completely over Chicago when the heavy iron gates of Greystone House swung open once more.

The long, winding driveway through the ancient oaks was illuminated by soft lanterns, casting a warm, golden glow against the gray stone facade. The armed guards were gone from the perimeter terraces; in their place, the house stood illuminated, welcoming, alive.

A sleek black town car pulled up to the grand front entrance.

Enzo opened the rear passenger door. Damian stepped out first, extending his hand.

Isabelle took it. She emerged slowly, wearing a soft wool coat that Damian had draped over her shoulders, her carved wooden cane clicking gently against the brick paving. She looked up at the towering limestone mansion that had once been her prison, her tomb, and her home.

Four years ago, she had been thrown out of these doors into the freezing rain.

Now, the massive oak doors stood wide open.

Standing on the threshold was Elena, holding the hand of a little girl dressed in a soft yellow dress, her golden curls tumbling around her shoulders, the silver lock at her left temple gleaming under the grand chandelier of the entrance hall.

Isabelle stopped at the base of the marble steps. Her breath caught in her throat. The cane slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the flagstones.

Lily looked down from the top step.

She looked at the beautiful woman with the golden hair and the gray-blue eyes—eyes that looked exactly like the reflection she saw in the bathroom mirror every morning. She looked at the woman’s trembling hands, at the tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

Then, Lily looked at the stuffed rabbit Isabelle was clutching against her chest.

“Mr. Bun?” Lily whispered.

Isabelle took a step forward, her legs shaking, her hands outstretched. “Lily… my sweet, beautiful Lily…”

Lily’s eyes widened. A memory, deep and primal, buried beneath three years of toddlerhood, suddenly ignited in her chest. The scent of lavender. The soft, whistling breath of a mother humming a lullaby in the dark of a clinic room.

“Mama?” Lily gasped.

Elena let go of her hand, smiling through a flood of tears. “Go, sweetheart. Go to your mama.”

Lily didn't walk down the steps. She flew.

Her little patent-leather shoes clattered against the marble as she hurled herself down the stairs. Isabelle dropped to her knees on the cold stone, opening her arms wide.

Lily collided with her chest like a tiny cannonball.

Mother and daughter crashed together in an embrace so fierce, so complete, that the entire world seemed to fall silent. Isabelle buried her face in Lily’s neck, inhaling her daughter’s scent, weeping with a sound of primal, triumphant relief that echoed through the grand courtyards of Greystone.

“My baby… my baby… my sweet girl…” Isabelle sobbed, kissing Lily’s cheeks, her hair, her eyes, her tiny hands. “You’re here… you’re safe… Mama is here…”

Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around Isabelle’s neck, burying her face in her mother’s hair.

“You came back,” Lily whispered, her little voice muffled against Isabelle’s coat. “Auntie Elena said you were painting the sky, but you came back!”

“I came back for you,” Isabelle cried, rocking her back and forth. “I will never leave you again. Never, ever again.”

Damian walked over slowly. He knelt beside them on the stone steps, wrapping his massive arms around both of them, enclosing his wife and daughter in an impenetrable circle of steel and devotion.

Lily turned her head, seeing Damian kneeling with them. She reached out one small hand and patted Damian’s cheek, wiping away a stray tear with her thumb.

“Don't cry, Mister,” Lily said solemnly. “Mama has tattoos in her heart, just like you.”

Damian laughed—a rich, deep, joyful laugh that echoed up into the vaulted ceilings of his home. He leaned down and kissed his daughter’s forehead, then turned and pressed his lips deeply against Isabelle’s, sealing four years of pain into the past.

Standing at the top of the stairs, Elena watched them, her heart overflowing with a peace she hadn't felt in four long years.

Enzo walked up the steps, stopping beside Elena. He held out a clean white handkerchief.

Elena took it, dabbing her eyes with a faint smile. “Thank you, Enzo.”

“Mr. Vescari had his lawyers file the paperwork this afternoon,” Enzo said quietly, looking down at the reunited family. “The deed to the lakeside estate in Kenwood has been transferred to your name. Along with a trust fund that ensures you will never have to work another day in your life.”

Elena looked at Enzo in shock. “I didn't do this for money.”

“We know,” Enzo murmured, his hardened face softening with profound respect. “That’s why you’re getting it. But Mr. Vescari also asked me to tell you… there will always be a suite for you at Greystone. If you want to remain Auntie Elena.”

Elena looked down at Lily, who was currently showing Isabelle the crooked marker drawings on her arms while Damian looked on with adoration.

May you like

“I think,” Elena said, her voice thick with emotion, “I’d like that very much.”
