Chapter 4 - The Bankruptcy of Brandon

By Friday morning, the dominoes were falling with terrifying speed.
At 9:00 AM, First New England Bank formally initiated emergency foreclosure proceedings against Brandon Montgomery’s commercial parcel in Stamford, citing irreparable fraud in the primary loan application.
At 11:30 AM, Ryan Montgomery’s investment advisory firm—Montgomery Financial Partners—was served with a mandatory suspension notice by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), freezing his broker license pending the outcome of the state grand jury investigation.
At 2:00 PM, I sat in Victoria’s office downtown, sipping a cup of black coffee, watching the rain streak down the high-rise windows overlooking the city.
My phone chimed with an email notification.
It was a formal letter from Ryan’s private defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton:
Dear Miss Vance,
My client, Ryan Montgomery, alongside Patricia Montgomery and Brandon Montgomery, respectfully requests an emergency confidential settlement conference at your office this afternoon. My clients are prepared to execute a full, unconditional surrender of all contested property claims, sign a global non-disclosure agreement, and deliver a formal written apology in exchange for the mitigation of criminal referral recommendations.
I looked at Victoria. "They want to settle."
Victoria pulled off her reading glasses, a thin, sharp smile touching her lips. "They don't have a choice, Madison. The grand jury meets on Monday morning. Once those indictments are handed down, no settlement in the world can stop the criminal process. They are terrifyingly aware that they are looking at real prison time."
"Tell them we will meet," I said cleanly. "At three o'clock."
At 3:00 PM, the heavy mahogany door of Victoria’s main conference room opened.
In walked the Montgomery family.
They didn't look like the aristocratic dynasty that had stood outside my gates three days ago.
Ryan looked hollowed out, his dark suit rumpled, thick black circles under his eyes, his hands trembling as he sat down at the glass conference table. Brandon sat beside him, wearing plain jeans and a jacket, looking completely defeated.
And Patricia... Patricia looked ten years older. Her hair was unstyled, her eyes bloodshot, her designer coat trailing loosely behind her as she dropped into her chair without saying a word.
Vanessa did not attend. She had spent forty-eight hours deleting her social media accounts after being dropped by her talent agency following the livestream viral video.
Their attorney, Arthur Pendelton, sat between them, laying two thin folders onto the table.
"Miss Vance, Miss Sterling," Pendelton spoke, his voice low and exhausted. "My clients are here to negotiate a complete resolution."
I sat across from them, wearing a simple cream wool sweater, my posture calm, quiet, and completely unshakeable.
"There is nothing to negotiate, Mr. Pendelton," I said smoothly.
Ryan raised his head, his voice cracking into a desperate, pleading whisper. "Madison... please. We’re facing total financial ruin. The bank is seizing Brandon’s lot. The state is foreclosing on Mom’s townhouse. My broker license is suspended. We have nothing left."
I looked at my ex-husband—the man who had stood beside his mother while she called me a "nobody" who was lucky to wear his family name.
"You had everything, Ryan," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "You had a $16 million estate on Beachside Avenue. You had a wife who loved you, who opened her home to you, who trusted you with her parents' memory. And you traded it all because you couldn't stand the fact that the house belonged to me."
Ryan lowered his head, tears spilling silently onto the glass table.
"Here are my terms," Victoria announced, sliding a single, four-page legal document across the table to Pendelton.
Full Restitution: Immediate transfer of Ryan’s remaining liquid retirement accounts ($420,000) to satisfy the forged maintenance fund judgment.
Property Surrender: Unconditional quitclaim of all secondary vehicle titles and personal property remaining at the Beachside Avenue estate.
Permanent Restraining Order: A lifetime civil protection order prohibiting Ryan, Patricia, Brandon, and Vanessa from coming within 1,000 feet of Madison Vance, her estate, or her business holdings.
Cooperation: Full, unreserved cooperation with the State Attorney General’s audit of Montgomery Luxury Event Planning LLC.
Pendelton read the four pages, let out a long, heavy sigh, and turned to look at Patricia and Ryan.

"Sign it," Pendelton said flatly. "It’s the only way you avoid an immediate federal arrest warrant on Monday."
Patricia’s hand shook violently as she picked up the silver pen. Tears of raw, bitter humiliation ran down her face as she signed her name at the bottom of the document—the final, complete surrender of the Montgomery family lie.
