Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Foundation

Inside the vaulted foyer of the Harrison home, the silence grew so thick you could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the corner. My mother tried to regain her composure, smoothing down her designer skirt with shaking fingers.

“Daniel, let’s be reasonable,” she forced out, pasting on a brittle, strained smile that didn’t reach her cold eyes. “Family matters shouldn’t be aired like dirty laundry. If Lily’s feelings were hurt, I’m sure Megan can... well, she can apologize. Can’t you, Megan?”

Megan crossed her arms, glaring daggers at the floor. “I am not apologizing to a brat who ruined my clothes! You’re all blowing this way out of proportion. It was just a little push!”

“A little push?” Daniel’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He pulled the first document from the folder and held it up. “According to the medical evaluation we got at the pediatrician’s office the afternoon of the incident—which was logged alongside the emergency services report Elena filed—Lily sustained contusions on her forearm and a mild sprain to her wrist. That crosses the line from a ‘family argument’ into physical assault of a minor.”

My father stepped between Daniel and the stairs, his face flushed with a mixture of rage and mounting terror. “You wouldn’t dare drag our family name through the mud over a scraped wrist! Do you know who I am in this city? Do you know my connections to the municipal board, the courts, the developers?”

“I know exactly who you are, Arthur,” Daniel said coldly. “You’re a man who built his entire life on intimidation, manipulation, and buying your way out of consequences. But your money and your board seats don’t mean a damn thing here. In fact, let’s talk about those connections.”

Daniel slid a second set of papers out of the folder and tossed them onto the polished mahogany console table. My father’s eyes dropped to the top page, and the color vanished from his face entirely.

“What... what is this?” my father whispered, his hands trembling as he reached out to touch the edge of the paper.

“That,” Daniel said, “is an audit report commissioned by the federal compliance division regarding the municipal contracting firm where you serve as primary consultant. It turns out that for the past five years, your firm has been systematically funneling promotional budgets and minority-share payouts through shell companies—one of which is registered entirely in Megan’s name, funded by public infrastructure grants.”

Megan gasped, dropping her phone. It hit the marble floor with a sharp crack, the screen splintering into a spiderweb of glass.

“That’s impossible,” Megan stammered, her face turning white as chalk. “That’s... that’s corporate restructuring! Dad said it was legal!”

“It was legal right up until the moment federal investigators noticed that the shell company was receiving kickbacks from the exact same subcontractors who failed the structural safety inspections on the new military family housing project near the base,” Daniel stated, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “The same housing project where my unit’s families were supposed to live. You cut corners on military housing, Arthur, to pad your daughter’s luxury shopping fund.”
