Chapter 38 - The Edge of the Blade

The bell rang. One lap to go.
The electronic scoreboard flashed the velocity readings: *58.4 km/h.* The fastest split time ever recorded by a developmental racer on this track.
Moreau realized his psychological intimidation had failed. His face twisted into a mask of frantic desperation. He knew what failure meant to the men who had paid his coach. As they rounded turn three, entering the steepest section of the banking, Moreau abandoned all pretense of sportsmanship.
He drifted low, cutting directly across the red transition line—an illegal maneuver that would mean disqualification, but only after the race was finished. He drove the reinforced titanium nose of his chair straight toward Mia’s left drive-wheel, aiming to wedge her frame into the inside safety rail.
"Foul!" Becker roared from the pit wall, slamming his cane against the timer's desk. "Disqualify him!"
Mia saw the metal coming in her peripheral vision. She had less than half a second.
Instead of swerving toward the flat apron—which would have killed her speed and cost her the race—she threw her upper body forward, locking both elbows, and executed a violent two-handed slam against the rims with everything her eight years of suffering, rehabilitation, and iron discipline had forged inside her soul.
Her chair surged forward by six inches.
Moreau’s nosecone missed her axle by a hair's breadth, striking the hard wooden curbing of the apron instead. The violent impact buckled Moreau’s front fork, sending his machine spinning out in a wild, screeching arc across the infield turf, spitting carbon shards in all directions.
Tanaka made her final move on the high side, her arms blurring in an aerodynamic blur of pure Japanese precision.
The two girls entered the final straightaway neck and neck, separated by less than the width of a thumb. The noise in the arena was deafening, a physical pressure wave that shook the timbers of the roof.
Mia dug deeper than she had ever dug in her life. She wasn't just racing Tanaka. She was racing the black ice on County Road 9. She was racing the fire that had almost consumed her in the Capitol Circle. She was racing the ghost of every tear her father had shed over her hospital bed.
With a final, guttural scream of absolute defiance, Mia threw her head across the finish line.
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding sheet of white light.
The digital timer stopped:
1. *USA — MIA MILLER: 1:12.408 (NEW WORLD RECORD)*
May you like
2. *JPN — YUKI TANAKA: 1:12.421*
The entire arena went dead silent for a single, stunned heartbeat—before erupting into a deafening, volcanic standing ovation that shook the Swiss mountains.
