Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Coat

Adrian didn't hesitate.
As he reached the edge of the fountain, he slid his heavy, custom-tailored cashmere tuxedo jacket off his shoulders and draped it gently around my shivering shoulders. The fabric was warm, dry, and carried the faint, clean scent of cedar and expensive cologne.
"Thank you, Adrian," I said, my voice steady, cool, and completely devoid of the trembling compliance my parents had spent my entire life trying to beat into me.
Reginald blinked, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He stared at Adrian, then at me, his brain desperately trying to compute the mathematical impossibility of what was happening before him.
"A-Adrian?" Reginald stammered, stepping forward, his corporate lawyer charm awkwardly plastered back onto his face. "My dear boy, I had no idea you were on the guest list! Of course, we invited Sterling Technologies to represent our corporate tech portfolio, but... but what are you doing with... with my oldest daughter?"
Adrian turned his head slowly, fixing Reginald with a gaze so cold and razor-sharp that my father instinctively took a half-step backward.
"Your oldest daughter, Mr. Brennan?" Adrian’s voice was dangerously quiet, carrying across the silent courtyard with lethal precision. "Strange. For a man who claims to be a pillar of Boston society, you seem remarkably ignorant of the fact that Chloe is my wife."
Wife.
The word dropped onto the cobblestones like a tactical strike.
Camille shrieked from the terrace, dropping her bouquet. Beatrice gasped so sharply she choked on her own saliva. Across the courtyard, three senior partners from Reginald’s law firm dropped their champagne glasses simultaneously, the crystal shattering into glittering shards against the stone floor.
"Wife?!" Beatrice shrieked, marching down the terrace steps, her face twisted in hysterical denial. "That’s impossible! Chloe has never been married! She lives alone in a modest apartment in Cambridge! She works as a... a bureaucrat! She doesn't even have a boyfriend! Adrian, you must be confused, she’s our daughter, we would know if she was married to a billionaire!"
Adrian looked at Beatrice with profound, unalloyed disgust.
"You didn't know because Chloe hasn't spoken to you as family in over four years, Mrs. Brennan," Adrian stated, stepping closer to me and sliding his arm securely around my waist. "And you didn't know because you’ve spent her entire life treating her like background noise while worshiping a daughter whose accomplishments wouldn't fill a single line of Chloe’s federal security clearance."
Reginald’s face turned the color of a bruised plum. He pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "Federal security clearance?! She’s a criminal justice major who takes low-level government desk jobs! She has nothing! She’s a failure compared to Camille!"
I finally spoke, turning my head slightly against Adrian’s shoulder.
"Dad," I said softly, using the title for the very last time. "Did you ever wonder why I was gone for six months last year? Did you ever ask why my mail came from a classified Department of Defense logistics hub in Quantico?"
Reginald stared at me, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
"For the past four years," I continued, my voice carrying the crisp, absolute authority of a senior FBI counterintelligence operative leading a high-stakes sting, "I haven't been sitting at a desk pushing paper. I’ve been running international cyber-espionage investigations. And as of forty-eight minutes ago, my team finished executing a federal financial audit on Brennan & Associates Law Firm."
The courtyard seemed to tilt off its axis.
May you like
"An audit?" Reginald whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic squeak. "You... you audited my firm?"
"Your firm has been funneling client escrow funds into offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands to cover your luxury real estate habits," I said smoothly, pulling a small, encrypted recording device from the pocket of Adrian’s wet jacket and holding it up for everyone to see. "And thanks to the search warrant signed by a federal judge this morning, federal marshals are currently seizing your Boston office, your Beacon Hill colonial, and every single bank account holding your ill-gotten gains."
