Chapter 5 - The Mastermind’s Gambit

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, crystalline autumn morning.

The Moretti estate had been transformed into an impenetrable command center. Over fifty heavily armed loyalists patrolled the perimeter. In the underground cells, Marco Russo and Sal Valetti had spent two days talking, singing every name, every bank account, and every dirty political connection that had backed their coup.

In the sunlit conservatory on the ground floor, I sat across from Lucia Moretti.

Lucia had her brother’s dark hair, but her eyes were warm and expressive. She wore an oversized cashmere sweater and held a steaming porcelain cup of tea, staring at my bandaged hands with open awe.

"You dropped a bronze urn on a hitman’s rifle," Lucia said for the third time, shaking her head. "My brother has had four hundred bodyguards in his life, Cara. Not one of them ever threw home decor at an assassin to save him."

I couldn't help but smile, though the tension still hung heavy in my chest. "It was the only thing heavy enough within reach."

"Dante hasn't slept in two days," Lucia said softly, her expression turning serious. "He’s been in the war room coordinating with the Commission in New York. The other families are horrified by what Marco did. Cutting brakes? Using speedboats to hit a Don’s private home while his family is inside? It violates every code the syndicate was built on. Dante is stripping the Russo family of every asset they own."

"And your sister-in-law?" I asked quietly.

Lucia’s eyes turned cold. "Vanessa was sent to a secure convent in upstate New York under perpetual surveillance. She will spend the rest of her life without a penny, without a phone, and without a single person who will ever speak her name again. In our world, that’s a punishment worse than death for a woman who loved the spotlight."

The conservatory doors swung open, and Dante entered.

He had bathed and shaved. He wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of forty-eight hours of relentless war, but the power radiating from him was absolute.

"Lucia," Dante said, his voice deep and calm. "Give us a moment."

Lucia smiled, squeezed my forearm gently, and slipped out of the room, closing the glass doors behind her.

Dante walked slowly toward the table. He pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase and set it before me.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down at the legal documents.

"Open it," he murmured, pulling out the chair beside me and sitting down.

I opened the folder. The first document was a deed of transfer for a fully funded, five-bedroom historic home in Beacon Hill, Boston. The second was a certified bank receipt indicating an escrow account containing five million dollars in my name. The third was a paid-in-full statement for my mother’s private nursing facility, guaranteeing her top-tier medical care for the next thirty years.

My breath caught in my throat. Tears rushed to my eyes, blurring the printed text.

"Dante... what is this?" I whispered, my hands shaking.

"Your freedom," Dante answered quietly. "Your father’s debts are wiped from every ledger. Your mother has been transferred to the premier private neurological clinic in Massachusetts, under around-the-clock specialized care. The house on Beacon Hill has state-of-the-art security, and the money in that trust is completely clean—laundered through legitimate commercial real estate holdings. You will never have to pour another cup of coffee. You can finish your nursing degree, Cara. You can live the life you were meant to live."

I stared at the papers, my chest tightening with an overwhelming ache that wasn't relief.

It was pain.

I looked up at him, my vision swimming with unshed tears. "You're sending me away."

Dante didn't flinch, but I saw the subtle tightening of his jaw, the muscle ticking against his temple. "I am giving you your life back. You saved me twice from a grave. The only way I can repay that debt is by ensuring you are never dragged into the darkness I live in."

"What if I don't want to run?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the rustle of the garden leaves outside.

Dante’s gray eyes flared with a sudden, violent heat. He leaned in, closing the distance between us until his breath brushed against my lips.

"Do not play with fire, Cara," he warned, his voice a low, possessive growl that made my heart leap into my throat. "I am not a good man. I am ruthless, I am selfish, and if you stay near me, the world will never look at you as an innocent girl again. If you stay, you become mine. And I do not share what belongs to me."

"You think I'm innocent?" I whispered, reaching out with my bandaged hand and pressing it firmly against his chest, right over his beating heart. "I watched a man die on your lawn and I didn't flinch. I threw that urn because the thought of you bleeding out on the stone made my soul go cold. You think this is just gratitude, Dante? I have spent two days watching you burn down an empire to protect the people you care about. I have never felt safer in my life than I feel in this house."

Dante went completely still. His hand came up, large and calloused, wrapping around mine against his chest. His heart was hammering beneath my palm—wild, heavy, and undeniably human.

"Cara..." he murmured, his control visibly fracturing.

Before he could speak, the glass doors of the conservatory were flung open violently.

Lorenzo stood there, his face pale, his weapon already drawn.

"Boss," Lorenzo said, breathing hard. "We have a critical situation."

Dante stood up instantly, stepping between Lorenzo and me out of sheer instinct. "Report."

"It’s not Sal Valetti. It’s Don Carmine Russo—Marco’s father," Lorenzo said grimly. "The old man came out of retirement. He didn't attack the estate. He knew our defenses were fortified."

A horrifying premonition gripped my chest.

"Where did he strike?" Dante demanded.

Lorenzo looked at me with deep regret in his eyes. "He struck the Saint Jude Care Facility in Worcester. Boss... they have Cara’s mother."
