Chapter 4 - The Monday Morning Audit

Monday morning arrived with the crisp, unforgiving efficiency of a winter storm sweeping down Lake Michigan.
At 8:30 AM, I was sitting in the passenger seat of an unmarked federal vehicle parked two blocks away from Kearney’s General Store, watching the familiar brick storefront through a pair of high-powered binoculars.
Beside me sat Agent Vance—a seasoned investigator from the U.S. Secret Service’s financial crimes division whom Maya had looped into the federal complaint due to the interstate wire fraud involved.
“You ready for this, Ms. Kearns?” Agent Vance asked, glancing over at me with a respectful nod.
“I’ve been ready since the moment that bowl of soup hit my face,” I replied evenly, adjusting the collar of my trench coat.
At 8:58 AM, a sleek black Mercedes SUV pulled up right in front of the general store’s main entrance.
The passenger door swung open, and Rosalind stepped out, wearing a designer cashmere coat, holding an iced latte from Starbucks, looking every bit the ruthless corporate executive she pretended to be. Moments later, Julian Sterling stepped out from the driver’s side—a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit, wearing an arrogant, self-satisfied smirk as he looked up at the store’s wooden sign.
They were early for their victory lap.
According to the foreclosure timeline they had secretly orchestrated, today was supposed to be the day the local bank posted the official eviction notice on our front door, forcing me out into the street while they signed the final land acquisition contracts with the city council at noon.
Rosalind unlocked the front glass door, pushed it open, and strode inside like she owned the place. Julian followed her, laughing at something she said over her shoulder.
“Alright, Agent Vance,” I murmured, lowering my binoculars. “Let’s go show them who really owns this building.”
We didn't just walk up to the store—we arrived with the coordinated precision of a military operation.
Two unmarked federal SUVs pulled up behind Julian’s Mercedes, blocking it entirely in the parking stall. Four federal agents in tactical windbreakers stepped out, moving briskly toward the front entrance, while Agent Vance and I walked right behind them.
The bell above the general store door chimed merrily—a cheerful, nostalgic sound that contrasted violently with the federal raid about to take place.
Rosalind was standing behind the main register counter, sipping her latte, looking over a stack of foreclosure paperwork, while Julian was examining the deli counter display cases with the critical eye of a vulture inspecting a carcass.
“Well, look who decided to show up early,” Rosalind called out brightly, assuming without looking up that the door chime signaled a delivery driver. “Did you bring the keys to the storage shed, Lorraine? Because the county auctioneers are arriving at—.”
She looked up.
Her sentence died instantly in her throat.
The smile vanished from her face, replaced by a look of stark, absolute terror as she saw four federal agents fan out across the store, locking the front doors and flipping the CLOSED sign over.
Julian spun around from the deli counter, his face flushing dark with outrage. “What is the meaning of this?! Who authorized you to enter a private commercial establishment?! Do you know who I am? I am Julian Sterling—!”
“Mr. Sterling, I am Special Agent Vance with the U.S. Secret Service Financial Crimes Division,” Agent Vance interrupted, his voice booming across the quiet aisles of the general store as he flashed a gold badge and a crisp federal arrest warrant. “You are being detained in connection with an ongoing federal investigation into interstate wire fraud, mortgage forgery, and systematic corporate embezzlement.”
Julian’s jaw dropped. The arrogant color drained completely from his cheeks, leaving him looking like a cornered rat. “Fraud? This is a civil real estate transaction! You have no jurisdiction—!”
“We have full jurisdiction under federal banking statutes, Mr. Sterling,” Agent Vance continued smoothly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists with a sharp click. “Especially when you forge federal loan guarantees and route stolen funds through interstate shell companies.”
Rosalind shrieked, dropping her iced latte onto the floor as it shattered into a puddle of brown liquid across the linoleum tiles.

“Lorraine?!” Rosalind screamed, staring at me as I stepped out from behind Agent Vance, my face clean, my trench coat buttoned, looking calm and unshakeable. “What did you do?! You called the police on us?! This is our store!”
“No, Rosalind,” I said, walking slowly across the polished wooden floors until I stood right in front of the cash register counter where she stood trembling. “This is my father’s store. And you just committed federal felonies trying to steal it.”
