Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Cottage

Six months later.
The spring thaw across Door County, Wisconsin, was breathtaking.
The snow had melted away, revealing lush green grass, blooming apple blossoms, and the familiar, weathered cedar siding of her grandmother’s cottage overlooking the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Michigan.
Morgan sat in a wooden rocking chair on the old screened porch, holding a warm mug of coffee in her hands. The morning breeze carried the sweet scent of pine and fresh lake water, peaceful and untainted.
Inside the county courthouse in Chicago three weeks ago, Julian Vance had pleaded guilty to attempted murder and wire fraud under a plea agreement that secured a mandatory twenty-five-year sentence in federal prison, with zero possibility of parole. His crypto schemes, his fake import companies, and his corporate shell corporations had all been dismantled by federal investigators, leaving him with nothing.
The Door County cottage remained untouched, legally secured under Morgan’s exclusive trust, its deed forever out of reach.
Morgan looked down at her left wrist. Resting against her skin was a simple, elegant silver bracelet—her grandmother’s heirloom, passed down through generations of women who knew how to survive winters, storms, and wolves in sheep's clothing.
She took a slow sip of her coffee, letting the warmth spread through her chest.
She never found out who the old woman in the green beret and grey trench coat was. She had never seen her on the CTA bus again, and no one else in the neighborhood had ever reported running into a mysterious passenger smelling of lavender.

Sometimes, miracles didn't need an explanation. They just needed someone willing to listen, a glass of water, and the courage to refuse the poison.
Morgan smiled, looking out across the sparkling water as the morning sun climbed high into an endless, unbroken blue sky.
