Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Light

One year later.

The afternoon sun cast a long, golden light across the pastures of Braddock Sanctuary.

Four horses walked gently along the wooden fence line, where three young military children were laughing as they fed them fresh carrots under the supervision of a veteran volunteer.

I sat on the wide wooden porch swing of the farmhouse, wearing a comfortable flannel shirt and boots, holding a warm mug of tea.

Walking up the brick steps toward me was Josie, holding a framed photograph she had taken in her school art class.

She climbed onto the swing beside me, leaning her head against my shoulder, and handed me the frame.

Inside was a beautiful, bright watercolor painting of our white farmhouse, bathed in golden sunlight, with two figures standing on the porch holding hands under a blue sky.

At the bottom of the painting, in her neat, proud fourth-grade handwriting, were three simple words:

OUR TRUE HOME.

I pulled my daughter close against my chest, holding her tight against my heart, kissing her soft hair under the open Missouri sky.

The nightmare was over. The dark shed was gone. My sister was serving her prison sentence, facing the consequences of her cruelty.

And standing together in the bright, warm light of our true home, my daughter and I were safe, whole, and completely, gloriously free.
