Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

My mother’s face drained of color. Taryn’s fork clattered against her plate with a sharp, echoing clink.

“Evan... what is the meaning of this?” Mom stammered, her voice suddenly sounding old and brittle.

“Read it,” I said, sliding the printed screenshots of the group chat across the polished oak table until they stopped right in front of my aunt.

Aunt Linda picked up the top paper, her eyes scanning the digital messages. As she read the words Operation: Break Noelle and the cold commentary about forcing a pregnant woman into heat exhaustion, her mouth dropped open in absolute horror.

She looked up at my mother, her eyes blazing with disgust. “Marjorie... did you write this? You did this to your own daughter-in-law? To your unborn granddaughter?”

“Linda, don’t be ridiculous, those are... those are taken out of context—!” Mom shrieked, grabbing for the papers.

I snatched the envelope back before she could touch them.

“There is no context in the world that makes conspiring to hospitalize a pregnant woman acceptable,” my voice echoed off the dining room walls, loud enough to silence every guest in the house. “You didn't just harass my wife. You plotted to break her down physically so you could manipulate me into letting you move in. You risked my daughter’s life for your own ego.”

Taryn stood up, her chair crashing backward onto the hardwood floor. “She was being lazy! Someone had to teach her how to be a real wife! You’re choosing her over your own family?”

“She is my family,” I shouted, standing up so fast my chair rattled. “Noelle is my wife. The baby she is carrying is my blood. You two are nothing more than toxic, narcissistic bullies who will never, ever be part of our lives again.”

I turned to Aunt Linda, my voice softening slightly. “I’m sorry you had to see this, Aunt Linda. But you deserved to know the truth about the monsters sitting at your table.”

I looked back at my mother one last time. She was shaking, staring at me not with love or maternal warmth, but with venomous hatred.

“Get out,” Mom whispered.

“Gladly,” I said.

I took Noelle’s hand. We walked out of Aunt Linda’s house, leaving the family dinner behind us in absolute ruin.
