Chapter 4 - The Traitor Within

The implication struck the mahogany-lined study like a physical blow. A digital signature requiring Arthur’s living biometrics had been generated from within the house, three years after his funeral.
“Someone in this house has cloned his digital footprint,” Margaret said, her voice dropping to a glacial, commanding whisper.
The sun rose over Boston, painting the city skyline in brilliant shades of cinematic gold and blue. Margaret arrived at the towering glass-and-steel Whitmore Corporate Headquarters at precisely 8:00 AM. She wore an immaculate pearl-white pantsuit, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying invincibility.
She bypassed the executive assistants, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor, and pushed open the heavy glass doors of the CEO’s office.
Adam was pacing behind his massive desk. His tie was loosened, his fair skin slick with sweat, and his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night. He looked up, freezing like a trapped animal as his mother entered.
“Mom, you can’t be here. The board meeting is closed,” Adam stammered, stepping backward.
“You are being blackmailed, Adam,” Margaret stated, cutting through his lies with clinical precision. “You forged my account at the restaurant to keep Vanessa’s family entertained because your personal assets are frozen. Who is forcing the proxy transfer?”
Adam collapsed into his leather chair, burying his face in his hands. “You don't understand. Six months ago, I authorized a shell company to absorb Vanessa's family debt. I didn't know the shell was tied to an international arms syndicate. They have the wire transfers. If I don't give them my proxy vote today, I go to federal prison.”
Margaret looked at her son, her disappointment a heavy, silent weight. “You sold the legacy of this family to save your own vanity.”
“I did it to save myself!” Adam shouted, tears of panic in his eyes.
Before Margaret could respond, the office doors swung open. Vanessa stepped in, wearing a stunning, tailored crimson dress, her blonde hair perfectly styled. Her usual dismissive sneer had been replaced by a bright, victorious smile.
“He didn't do it to save himself, Margaret,” Vanessa said smoothly, walking over to stand behind Adam’s chair. She placed a manicured hand on his trembling shoulder. “He did it because I told him to.”

Vanessa reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a heavy, antique brass key.
“The proxy vote is just a formality,” Vanessa smiled, her eyes flashing with venomous triumph. “I already hold the physical deed to the Whitmore estate. And I’m evicting you at noon.”
