Chapter 5 - Fire and Forgiveness

The scream was followed by the violent crash of wood splintering.

"Emily!" Margaret shouted, lunging forward to pull Leo and Maya behind her into the suite's private bedroom.

Emily dropped the phone onto the carpet. "Stay back, Margaret! Lock the door!"

Through the phone line, Nathan heard the violence erupt. "Emily?! Emily! What's happening?!"

"Someone's breaking in!" she gasped before the line went dead.

Nathan didn't think. He didn't call his security detail. He bolted out of the Whitmore Global executive garage in his Aston Martin, tearing through the Manhattan traffic like a guided missile, running three red lights along Madison Avenue, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, his mind screaming in terror.

*Not them. God, please, take me, ruin me, kill me, just not them.*

At the St. Regis, the door to Emily's suite was kicked open.

Two men in dark tactical gear and masks burst into the room. They weren't common thieves; their movements were precise, coordinated, and aggressive. Behind them stepped a man Emily recognized with a jolt of horror: Julian Vance’s disgraced nephew, Richard, an operative known for executing the dirty, illegal maneuvers of the Halbrook-Vance corporate syndicate.

With Nathan’s public confession, the Halbrook merger was permanently dead, and their stock was free-falling. They were ruined—and desperate men did monstrous things.

"Where are the kids?" Richard barked, a heavy pistol gripped in his gloved hand. "Get the boy! If we have the Whitmore heir, Nathan signs whatever transfer documents we put in front of him!"

"Get out!" Emily screamed, grabbing a heavy brass floor lamp and swinging it with all her strength.

The heavy metal base connected with the first intruder's shoulder, throwing him off balance. But Richard lunged forward, his heavy hand catching Emily across the cheek. The blow knocked her violently to the floor, her head striking the edge of a mahogany side table.

Blood welled at her hairline. Her vision spun, but as she saw the second man kicking at the bedroom door where Leo and Maya were screaming in terror, she scrambled forward on her hands and knees, grabbing the man’s combat boot with desperate, feral strength.

"Don't touch them!" she cried out, her fingernails tearing against the heavy leather. "Kill me, you cowards! Don't you touch my children!"

The man cursed, raising the butt of his weapon to strike her down.

The main door flew open with the force of a battering ram.

Nathan Whitmore didn't look like a CEO. He looked like an enraged demon.

He didn't hesitate. He crossed the distance in two strides, tackling the man hovering over Emily with bone-crushing force. Both men crashed into the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of lethal shards.

Nathan felt glass slicing through his suit, tearing into his arms, but adrenaline blinded him to the pain. He drove his fist into the intruder's face with brutal, relentless fury until the man went completely limp.

"Nathan!" Emily choked out.

Richard turned, raising his pistol toward Emily.

"No!" Nathan roared.

He launched his body between the barrel of the gun and Emily.

*BANG.*

The deafening report of the gunshot tore through the suite.

Nathan gasped, a sudden, burning agony ripping through his left shoulder and chest. The impact threw him backward over Emily, his heavy frame shielding her entirely.

Richard prepared to fire again, his face twisted in panic, but Margaret burst out of the bedroom wielding a heavy cast-iron skillet she had taken from the suite’s kitchenette, smashing it with terrifying precision into the side of Richard’s skull.

The man collapsed to the carpet, unconscious, the gun skittering across the floor.

Sirens wailed in the street below. Hotel security and armed police officers flooded through the shattered doorway seconds later, pinning the intruders to the floor and securing the perimeter.

Emily dragged herself out from beneath Nathan’s weight.

"Nathan! Nathan!"

He was lying on his back amid the sea of shattered glass, his expensive white shirt rapidly soaking in crimson. His face was gray, his breath coming in shallow, wet gasps.

"Emily..." he whispered, his trembling, blood-stained hand reaching out blindly.

"I'm here. I'm right here," she wept, pressing both hands against the wound in his chest to staunch the flow of blood. "Hold on! Call an ambulance! Somebody help him!"

"Are... are they safe?" Nathan coughed, blood speckling his lips, but his silver-gray eyes were fixed entirely on her face. "Leo... Maya..."

"They're safe. They're unhurt," she sobbed, her tears washing away the blood on his cheek. "You saved us. Nathan, please, keep your eyes open. Don't you dare close your eyes!"

A weak, heartbreaking smile touched Nathan’s pale lips.

"I kept my promise..." he whispered, his voice fading like an autumn breeze. "I destroyed... the man who hurt you. I'm sorry, Emily... I'm so... so sorry..."

His head licked to the side. His hand went limp against the blood-soaked carpet.

"Nathan!" Emily’s scream shook the shattered walls of the suite. "Nathan, wake up!"

The surgical waiting room at Mount Sinai Hospital smelled of antiseptic and dread.

Six hours had passed.

Emily sat on a vinyl chair, her head bandaged, her midnight-blue dress replaced by a pair of hospital scrubs. Leo was curled up asleep on her lap, his small hand clutching her thumb even in slumber. Across the aisle, Margaret sat rocking Maya, who was quietly drinking a carton of apple juice, her eyes wide and exhausted.

David Vance, Emily's primary investor, walked into the waiting room, his face grim.

"The police have Richard and the two operatives in custody," Vance said quietly. "Julian Vance and the Halbrooks have already been indicted for conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, and corporate sabotage. Their empire is finished by tomorrow morning."

Emily barely heard him. Her eyes were fixed on the double red doors of the surgical unit.

"How is he?" she asked, her voice cracking.

Before Vance could answer, the red doors swung open.

The chief surgeon walked out, pulling off his blue surgical cap, his face etched with deep fatigue. Emily stood up carefully, transferring Leo into Margaret's arms, and rushed to the doctor.

"Doctor?"

"The bullet missed his heart by less than two centimeters," the surgeon said, letting out a heavy sigh. "It tore through the left lung and shattered his clavicle. He lost an enormous amount of blood. There were two moments on the table where we thought we lost him."

Emily’s heart seized. "Is he..."

"He's a fighter, Miss Carter," the doctor offered a gentle, tired smile. "He survived the surgery. We’ve stabilized his vitals and transferred him to the ICU. He's unconscious, but he made it."

Emily covered her mouth with both hands, dropping back onto the plastic chair as a flood of hot, cleansing tears broke through her dam of restraint.

He was alive.

***

Two days later, Nathan slowly opened his eyes.

The sterile white ceiling of the private intensive care room gradually came into focus. The rhythmic *beep... beep... beep* of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room. Every breath he took felt like breathing broken glass, his chest tightly bound in heavy surgical dressings.

He moved his fingers weakly.

Beside the bed, sleeping with her head resting against his mattress, was Emily. Her hand was wrapped around his cold fingers.

Nathan stared at her, tears stinging his dry eyes. He dared not move, terrified that if he shifted, the vision would evaporate like morning fog.

Emily stirred.

She lifted her head, blinking against the soft sunlight filtering through the blinds. When she saw his open eyes, a look of profound, breathtaking relief washed over her bruised face.

"You're awake," she whispered.

"You stayed," Nathan croaked, his voice barely a rasp.

"You took a bullet for our children, Nathan," she said softly, squeezing his hand. "Where else would I be?"

Nathan turned his face slightly into the pillow, unable to bear the grace in her eyes. "I don't deserve your kindness, Emily. I don't deserve to breathe the same air as you."

"No," Emily said honestly, her voice gentle but firm. "You didn't deserve it five years ago. You were cruel, selfish, and cowardly. And I will never forget the pain of that cold basement, Nathan. I will never forget the terror of delivering our babies alone."

Nathan wept silently, his chest hitching in agonizing pain. "I know. I know."

"But," she continued, reaching up to gently wipe the tears from his hollow cheeks, "I also saw you stand in front of the entire world and destroy your pride to defend my honor. And I saw you throw your body between a gun and my life. A monster doesn't do that, Nathan. A monster runs away."

The door to the ICU room clicked open quietly.

Margaret stood in the threshold, holding Leo and Maya by their hands.

Nathan’s breath caught in his throat. His monitor spiked slightly, the steady beeping quickening with his racing heart.

"They wanted to see the man who saved them," Emily whispered, standing up and motioning for the children to approach.

Leo walked forward slowly, clutching his plastic Triceratops, his silver-gray eyes studying the tubes, the monitors, and the pale man in the bed with deep, serious contemplation. Maya lingered behind him, her little fingers twisting the crooked pink ribbon of her dress.

"Hello, Leo. Hello, Maya," Nathan whispered, terrified that speaking too loudly might frighten them away.

Leo stepped right up to the edge of the bed. He looked at the heavy white bandages on Nathan’s shoulder, then looked up into Nathan’s eyes—the exact duplicate of his own.

"Did the bad men hurt you?" Leo asked solemnly.

"A little bit, buddy," Nathan managed to choke out, fighting the tidal wave of tears threatening to overwhelm him. "But I'm okay now."

"Mommy said you were very brave," Maya chimed in, taking a cautious step closer, peering at his pale face. "She said you protected us like a knight."

Nathan broke down completely. He buried his face in his uninjured arm, his broad back shaking with silent, wracking sobs.

A small, warm hand touched his wrist.

Leo was patting his arm gently. "Don't cry. You can hold my dinosaur if you want. It makes me brave when I get shots at the doctor."

Nathan slowly lifted his head, looking down at the small green plastic toy Leo was pressing into his trembling palm.

"Thank you, Leo," Nathan whispered, closing his fingers around the cheap plastic toy as if it were the most precious jewel on the face of the earth. "It's the best dinosaur in the world."

Emily stood beside the bed, her arm wrapped around Margaret’s shoulders, watching the broken titan hold his son's toy.

The scars of the past were deep, carved by years of sorrow and cruelty. But as she watched Maya reach out to touch Nathan’s hospital bracelet, Emily knew that beneath the ashes of who they had been, something entirely new had finally begun to grow.
