Chapter 1 - The Emergency Room and the Whispered Betrayal

The ambulance siren wailed as it cut through the coastal Rhode Island traffic toward Newport Memorial Hospital. Inside the back of the vehicle, the paramedic monitored my vital signs while pressing a cold oxygen mask to my face. Every bump in the road sent sharp, agonizing contractions rippling across my abdomen.
"Hang in there, Mrs. Hargrove," the paramedic said, his voice strained above the roar of the engine. "We're less than two minutes away. Just keep breathing for your baby."
I closed my eyes, tears mixing with the chlorine still stinging my face. My mind raced back to the moment Jude Barrett had leaned into the ambulance and whispered about the service entrance camera. Jude had been head of security at Hargrove Coastal Resorts for five years—a man of absolute honor who had watched Callum slowly transform from a passionate visionary into a cold, ruthless executive blinded by status and ambition.
When the ambulance backed into the hospital bay, medical staff swarmed the doors. I was wheeled into the emergency obstetrics unit under glaring fluorescent lights.
"Twenty-nine weeks pregnant, sustained blunt trauma from a fall, sudden contractions and decreased fetal movement," the attending physician, Dr. Lisa Sterling, recited sharply as nurses hooked me up to monitors.
The cold gel of the ultrasound probe touched my bare skin. The room went dead silent except for the frantic clicking of equipment.
I held my breath, staring at Dr. Sterling’s face. A single line formed between her brows.
"Do you hear that, Marin?" Dr. Sterling asked softly.
A rapid, steady rhythm filled the room—thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

"Her heart rate is strong," Dr. Sterling breathed out a sigh of relief. "She’s fighting, Marin. Your baby is fighting."
Tears streamed down my cheeks. I let out a ragged sob of pure gratitude. My daughter was alive. But the relief was instantly tempered by a cold, searing fury toward the man who had tried to drown us both.
