Chapter 2 - The Clearing of the Penthouse

By 11:15 PM, three Chicago Police cruisers and two dark military police vehicles were parked in the circular driveway of the high-rise tower overlooking Lake Michigan.

The elevator opened onto the private penthouse foyer.

The double mahogany doors were open. Inside, the dining table remained littered with dirty wine glasses, half-eaten prime rib, and the scorched napkin Charles had used to hold his lit cigarette.

Charles sat at the head of my dining table, drinking my scotch, while Diane nervously adjusted her pearls. Ryan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, talking loudly into his phone to his business lawyer. Madison was taking selfies near the fireplace.

"I don't care what the building manager says!" Ryan shouted into his phone. "My wife is hysterically pregnant! She called 911 over a minor family disagreement! The penthouse is marital property—"

"Mr. Brooks," Detective Vance’s voice cut through the room like a steel cable.

Ryan spun around. His face went pale as he saw me walk through the door, flanked by Detective Vance, two uniformed Chicago police officers, and Major Sterling in his full Army Service Uniform.

"Elena!" Ryan stammered, taking two steps toward me, putting on a face of frantic, fake concern. "Thank God! Are you okay? The baby? I was so worried about you—"

"Halt," Major Sterling commanded, stepping directly between Ryan and me. "Do not take another step toward Captain Brooks."

Charles stood up from the mahogany table, setting his glass down with a loud, authoritative CLACK. He adjusted his designer jacket, attempting to summon the arrogance that had intimidated his business partners for thirty years.

"Officers," Charles said smoothly, walking toward the foyer. "This is a private family matter that has spun out of control due to my daughter-in-law's hormonal instability. My son and I are merely trying to manage her assets while she undergoes medical evaluation—"

"Charles Brooks," Detective Vance interrupted, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt. "You are under arrest for aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, felony assault, and extortion."

Diane let out a sharp, ear-piercing shriek. "What?! Are you insane?! Do you know who my husband is?!"

"I know exactly who he is, Mrs. Brooks," Vance replied coldly, grabbing Charles’s arm and pinning it behind his back. "And I know what a cigarette burn looks like on a six-month pregnant abdomen."

"Ryan! Do something!" Charles roared as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Call Attorney Vance! Tell him to get the judge on the phone!"

Ryan lunged forward. "Hey! Get your hands off my father! This is my house!"

I stepped past Major Sterling and stood face-to-face with my husband.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I looked at the man who had held my wrists while his father pressed burning tobacco into my skin.

"This is not your house, Ryan," I said, pulling a certified property deed and a bank statement from Major Sterling's folder. "This property was purchased in 2019 under the Elena Brooks Revocable Trust. You signed a prenuptial agreement waiving all rights to this residence."

I turned my head to the uniformed officers behind me.

"Officers, Ryan Brooks, Diane Brooks, and Madison Brooks are currently trespassing on private property. They have twenty seconds to leave my home, or they will be arrested alongside Charles."

Ryan stared at me in sheer, unadulterated horror. The mask of the loving, protective husband had completely fallen away, leaving behind a terrified, pathetic coward.

"Elena... please," Ryan whispered, his hands trembling as officers stepped forward to escort him toward the elevator. "Think about our family! Think about the baby!"

"I am thinking about the baby, Ryan," I said, watching the elevator doors close on his father. "Which is why you will never step foot in this building again."
