Chapter 5 - The Final Accounting

Five minutes later, the heavy glass doors of my corner office swung open.

Evelyn Mercer stepped inside.

If I hadn't known who she was, I might not have recognized her. The immaculate, ice-blue silk dresses and perfectly coiffed hair were gone. She wore a simple, dark trench coat, her face pale and lined with deep, unyielding exhaustion. Her hands trembled as she clutched her leather handbag against her waist.

She looked seventy-two years old, broken, and utterly alone.

She didn't march into my office with her usual aristocratic arrogance. She walked slowly, hesitantly, stopping three feet away from my desk, looking at me sitting in my executive chair beside Noah.

"Claire," Evelyn whispered, her voice raspy and thin. "Please."

"Sit down, Evelyn," I said, keeping my tone entirely professional, devoid of malice or pity.

Evelyn sank into the leather guest chair, burying her face in her trembling hands for three long seconds before looking up at me with red-rimmed eyes.

"Daniel’s firm terminated his contract this morning," Evelyn choked out, a tear sliding down her pale cheek. "They are revoking his stock options and filing for civil recovery regarding the insurance claims. Vanessa’s lawyers served him with divorce papers an hour ago. They’re freezing our joint accounts."

I took a slow sip of my coffee, listening in quiet silence.

"We are going to lose the house, Claire," Evelyn wept, her hands fluttering helplessly in the air. "The Mercer estate... the family name... everything Daniel’s father built... it’s all falling apart. I came here to beg you. Please... call off Arthur Vance. Tell BioMed not to press criminal charges against my son."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the mahogany desk, looking directly into the eyes of the woman who had spent seven years treating me like an defective appliance.

"Evelyn," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and devastatingly clear. "Do you remember October 14th, 2022?"

Evelyn blinked, thrown off by the question. "What?"

"October 14th, 2022," I repeated. "It was the day the second IVF cycle failed. I sat at your kitchen island, crying so hard I couldn't breathe. My body was bruised from hormone injections, my hair was thinning, and I felt like a complete failure as a woman."

Evelyn swallowed hard, looking away.

"Do you remember what you said to me that afternoon, Evelyn?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

"You looked at me," I continued, "and you said, 'Some women are built to carry legacies, Claire, and some are just meant to take up space. You should stop dragging my son down and let him find a real wife.'"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the office.

"You sat at that island, knowing your son had canceled his medical appointments," I said, my voice unyielding. "You knew he was hiding his lab results. You knew I was physically destroying my body with unnecessary drugs, and you chose to protect his ego by destroying my humanity."

"I... I was protecting my son!" Evelyn sobbed defensively.

"No, Evelyn," I corrected coldly. "You were protecting your vanity. And now, the bill has come due. I didn't ruin your family. I didn't destroy your estate. Daniel’s arrogance and your cruelty destroyed it. I simply stopped holding up the walls."

I stood up from my desk, smoothing down my tailored blazer.

"My firm will not interfere with the state prosecutor’s office, nor will we withdraw our ethics findings from BioMed Dynamics," I stated cleanly. "If Daniel committed insurance fraud, he will face the legal consequences like any other citizen."

I walked over to the door, opening it wide.

"You wanted me erased from your family, Evelyn," I said, looking down at her. "Consider your wish permanently granted. Goodbye."

May you like

Evelyn stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. She saw zero room for negotiation, zero pity, and zero weakness in my eyes.

She slowly stood up, pulled her trench coat tightly around her trembling frame, and walked out of my office, her head bowed in absolute defeat.
