Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

Eleanor spun around, her eyes widening in disbelief as she saw her golden child standing in the driveway.
"Ethan?" she gasped, momentarily disoriented. "What are you doing here? I told you to stay at the house! Did you follow me?"
Ethan didn't run to her side. He didn't offer the protective indignation she clearly expected from him. He walked slowly up the porch steps, his gaze fixed entirely on me. His eyes were red-rimmed, swollen from hours of crying, his jaw clenched tightly.
"I found the papers in your study, Mom," Ethan said quietly, pulling a crumpled manila folder from inside his coat. "You forgot to lock the fireproof safe when you rushed out of the house."
Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. She made a desperate lunge to snatch the folder, but Ethan stepped back, holding it out of her reach.
"Ethan, give that to me right now!" she commanded, her voice turning shrill again. "You don't know what that is! That’s private family business!"
"No, it isn't," Ethan whispered, shaking his head. Tears spilled over his lower lashes, cutting tracks down his pale cheeks. "It’s a petition to declare Leo mentally incapacitated. You filed it six months ago. You had a corrupt private doctor draft an evaluation claiming Leo suffered from severe paranoid delusions and couldn't manage his own affairs. You were going to have him committed the week after graduation so you could gain power of attorney."
I felt the blood drain from my face. My knees wobbled, and I had to reach out and grip the porch railing to keep from falling. I stared at the woman who had given birth to me. I had known she favored Ethan. I had known she resented my existence. But this... this was monstrous. She hadn't just neglected me; she had planned to erase my humanity entirely.
"I did it for you!" Eleanor yelled, entirely unrepentant, her hands trembling with rage. "Your tuition deposit is due in three weeks! We don't have eighty thousand dollars a year, Ethan! That trust was the only way! Do you want to throw your entire future away because this selfish parasite refuses to share?"
Ethan flinched as if she had slapped him. He looked down at the documents, then looked up at me, his lip quivering.
"I never asked for any of this," Ethan choked out. "Every year... every birthday... I thought you just loved sharing things with me, Leo. I swear to God, I thought Mom gave you gifts privately in the morning. When she told me you were just shy and didn't like opening presents in front of people, I believed her. I was stupid. I was a selfish, blind coward."
Ethan walked past Eleanor, who reached out to grab his sleeve, but he jerked his arm away from her touch. He walked straight up to Julian, holding out the manila folder.
"Take it," Ethan told our father. "Take all of it. The doctor’s name is Dr. Robert Vance. Mom paid him five thousand dollars from my college savings account to sign those evaluation papers. There are text messages printed in here between them."
Julian took the folder, his jaw set in a hard line. "You did the right thing, son."
"Don't call him son!" Eleanor shrieked, lunging forward like a wild animal. "He is my son! You left him! Both of you are ungrateful, treacherous dogs!"
"Eleanor," Julian said, his voice ringing with chilling authority as he raised his phone. "The local sheriff’s deputy is parked at the end of the access road. I called him the moment you turned onto the lane. You have thirty seconds to get into your car and drive off my property, or I will hand him this folder along with the audio recording of you threatening Leo’s estate."

A blue and red flash briefly reflected against the distant pine trees at the foot of the hill. A patrol cruiser slowly turned into the gravel drive.
