Chapter 3 - The Counting Backward

The silence behind me was absolute.
I stood up slowly, holding four-year-old Chloe on my left hip, while four-year-old Maya and four-year-old Lily held tightly onto my right hand and my coat pocket.
Declan was standing three feet away. His leather garment bag had slipped from his hand, resting against his shoe on the pavement.
His face was completely drained of color. His eyes—usually so sharp, arrogant, and calculating—were wide, fixed, and unblinking as he stared at the three little girls standing beside me.
He looked at Maya’s face: the distinct, almond-shaped dark eyes, the high cheekbones, the slight dimple on her left cheek.
He looked at Chloe’s face: the exact same dark, wavy hair, the same nose, the same sharp, observant gaze.
He looked at Lily’s face: the identical features that mirrored his own mother’s vintage childhood photographs—photographs that sat in silver frames in his family's estate in Connecticut.
"Cassidy..." Declan stammered, his voice hoarse, raspy, and completely stripped of his corporate confidence. "Who... who are these children?"
"These are my daughters, Declan," I said softly, my tone calm and steady under the bright Georgia sun.
Declan took a step closer, his eyes darting frantically from one little girl to the next.
"How... how old are they?" Declan whispered, his hands trembling slightly at his sides.
"They're four years old," I answered cleanly. "They turned four two months ago."
I watched his face as the math hit his brain like a physical blow.
I could see his internal timeline unspooling in real-time:
Five years ago (May 2021): The divorce papers were signed.
Four years and nine months ago (August 2021): Cassidy walked out of the marriage.
Four years and two months ago (March 2022): The triplets were born.
Declan’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
His mind was frantically working through the biology, the dates, the gestation period of a high-risk triplet pregnancy.
When I walked out of our Manhattan townhouse five years ago, I didn't just leave behind his infidelity and his arrogant family.
I left three weeks before my first doctor’s appointment confirmed that I was pregnant with identical triplets—conceived during our final, tragic attempt to reconcile our marriage in Bermuda.
When I discovered I was carrying three babies, I made a conscious, protective choice. I knew what Declan and his toxic, controlling family would do. They would turn my pregnancy into a corporate custody battle. They would use their money to hire lawyers, demand joint custody, take my children to private boarding schools, and raise them under the same arrogant, soul-crushing values that Declan possessed.
So I chose silence. I signed the no-fault divorce agreement without requesting alimony, child support, or marital asset divisions. I used my own savings, built my own business, and raised my three daughters surrounded by unconditional love, warmth, and peace.
"Four years old..." Declan rasped out, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at Maya’s face. "Cassidy... March 2022... they... they are mine."
It wasn't a question. It was a terrifying, undeniable realization.

Maya looked up at Declan, her small brow furrowing as she noticed his intense, trembling gaze. She pulled her hand tighter into mine, stepping behind my skirt.
"Mommy," Maya whispered softly in her clear, sweet voice. "Who is that scary man?"
