Chapter 4 - The Executive Boardroom

Monday morning, 8:45 AM.

The 40th floor of the Ashford Tower in downtown Chicago sat bathed in bright morning sunlight, offering panoramic views of Lake Michigan.

Inside the grand executive boardroom, twenty high-ranking board members, corporate lawyers, and financial analysts sat around a fifty-foot mahogany conference table.

At the head of the table sat Victoria Ashford, wearing an immaculate lavender Chanel suit, flanked by her husband, Arthur Ashford, and their lead corporate counsel, Julian Hayes.

Fiona sat near the side wall, wearing a dark dress, looking tense, crossing and uncrossing her legs.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Victoria announced, setting her gold fountain pen beside a leather binder. "We are gathered here for the formal execution of our primary credit restructuring with Apex Capital Holdings. This forty-million-dollar facility will fully stabilize our liquidity and allow us to proceed with our expansion."

Arthur Ashford nodded nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Has the Apex representative arrived yet, Julian?"

Attorney Julian Hayes checked his watch. "They called five minutes ago, Arthur. Senior Managing Partner Marcus Vance is coming up the elevator right now, accompanied by the primary equity holder."

Victoria smiled—a cold, victorious expression—and looked toward Fiona in the spectator row. "You see, darling? I told you that little drama on Saturday wouldn't affect real business. Ethan Bennett is probably crying in his little apartment right now, realizing he threw away the chance of a lifetime."

Fiona offered a tight smile, though a strange, cold knot was beginning to form in her stomach.

THUD.

The heavy double glass doors of the boardroom were thrown wide open.

Walking into the room was Marcus Vance, wearing a six-thousand-dollar tailored suit, carrying a thick leather litigation briefcase.

And walking right beside him, wearing a dark navy suit with an immaculate silk tie, his posture straight, cold, and commanding, was me.

Walking behind us, wearing his simple, clean charcoal suit, was my father, Thomas Bennett.

The entire boardroom went dead silent.

Victoria sprang out of her leather chair so fast she knocked her crystal water glass onto the mahogany table.

"Ethan?!" Victoria shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "What is the meaning of this security breach?! How did you get onto this floor?!"

Arthur stood up, his face red with anger. "Security! Get these people out of my boardroom immediately!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding a silver badge and a certified court document, setting it down cleanly at the center of the mahogany table.

"Sit down, Mr. Ashford," Marcus spoke, his voice booming across the silent room like a thunderclap. "I am Marcus Vance, Senior Managing Partner of Apex Capital Holdings. And this is Ethan Bennett—the founder, sole owner, and Chief Executive Officer of Apex Capital."

Silence. Absolute, terrifying, suffocating silence.

Fiona’s jaw dropped open. She gripped the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned pure white.

Victoria stared at me, her eyes wide, bloodshot, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly as her brain frantically tried to process the words.

"Apex... Apex Capital...?" Victoria stammered, her voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. "No... no, that's impossible! Ethan is a glorified engineer! He runs a small consulting firm!"

"Bennett Systems is the parent technology holding company that created Apex Capital three years ago, Mrs. Ashford," I said, walking slowly to the head of the table, stopping directly across from her. "The patent royalties from my elevator safety systems generate twenty million dollars a year in net liquidity."

I turned my eyes toward my father, who stood beside me, his hands clasped calmly in front of him, looking at the trembling Ashford family with quiet, unshakeable dignity.

"And the man you called 'gutter trash' two nights ago," I continued, every word dropping like an iron anvil onto the glass table, "is the Vice Chairman of our family foundation."
