Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Legacy

Eight months later. Autumn in Columbus.
The trial had been swift, brutal, and completely devastating for the Kensington name.
Faced with 4K video evidence, time-stamped 911 audio recordings, twenty years of concealed pediatric medical records, and the expert forensic testimony of Dr. Sarah Jenkins, Aaron’s defense completely collapsed.
On a chilly Tuesday morning, the jury returned their verdicts after less than ninety minutes of deliberation.
The courtroom was silent as Judge Vance read the final decrees:
Aaron Kensington: Convicted on all counts of Felony Assault, Domestic Battery, and Willful Endangerment. Sentenced to eight years in a state penitentiary, with no eligibility for parole for six years.
Douglas Kensington: Convicted of Complicity to Felony Assault, Child Endangerment, and Filing a False Police Report. Sentenced to six years in a state penitentiary, alongside a mandatory $150,000 civil restitution penalty paid directly to Madison Kensington.
Divorce & Estate Division: The Kensington house was sold at auction for $850,000, with seventy-five percent of the net proceeds awarded to Eleanor Kensington as sole marital restitution.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Aaron and Douglas to the state transport van, Douglas turned his head once, looking at me sitting in the front row.
He wasn't laughing anymore. He wasn't smiling. His face was hollow, wrinkled, and completely broken—the face of a man whose entire legacy of cruelty had been stripped away under the blinding light of the truth.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away.
I simply looked at him with the calm, quiet detachment of a woman who was no longer his victim.
