Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM MASSACRE

The bail hearing at the Manhattan Criminal Court was a bloodbath of public humiliation.

I wasn't there in person—Dr. Vance had ordered another forty-eight hours of inpatient observation for Grace and me—but Dominic had set up a secure, closed-circuit video feed directly to the television mounted on the wall of my hospital suite.

On the screen, Daniel Pierce looked like a ghost of the man who had shoved me in the hospital corridor forty-eight hours earlier. His custom Brioni suit was crumpled, his white shirt stained and missing three buttons. His hair was greasy, his eyes wild and bloodshot. Beside him, Vanessa sat in standard-issue gray corrections sweatpants, her head buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Your Honor, my clients are pillars of the community!" Daniel's court-appointed attorney pleaded, sweating visibly under the glare of the courtroom cameras. "Mr. Pierce manages hundreds of millions in municipal funds! He has no prior criminal record! This is a domestic dispute that has been grotesquely exaggerated by the complainant's vindictive family!"

Judge Evelyn Vance—who, by no small coincidence, happened to be the second cousin of Dr. Sarah Vance—peered over her half-moon spectacles with eyes made of flint.

"A domestic dispute, counsel?" Judge Vance’s voice echoed sharply through the courtroom. "I have reviewed the preliminary evidence submitted by the District Attorney’s office. I have watched high-definition surveillance footage of Mr. Pierce physically restraining his thirty-four-week pregnant wife while she was experiencing an acute hypertensive emergency. I have examined medical photographs of hematomas on her wrist that match the defendant’s grip pattern."

Daniel leaned toward the microphone, his voice frantic, desperate. "Your Honor! My wife is medically unstable! She has a history of severe postpartum depression from a prior miscarriage! I was restraining her to prevent her from throwing herself down the stairs! Ask her sister—Vanessa, tell the judge!"

Vanessa didn't look up. She flinched as if Daniel had struck her, pulling her corrections sweatshirt tighter around her trembling shoulders.

"Miss Bennett has already provided a sworn, preliminary statement to the District Attorney, Mr. Pierce," Judge Vance stated coldly, shuffling a sheet of paper. "A statement in which she confesses to receiving over four million dollars in stolen trust funds from you over a forty-month period, under the agreement that she would assist you in isolating Mrs. Pierce from her medical and legal advocates."

Daniel spun toward Vanessa, his face contorting into an expression of murderous rage. "You stupid, treacherous b—!"

*BAM!*

Judge Vance’s gavel slammed down like a gunshot.

"Bail is denied for Mr. Pierce," Judge Vance ordered sharply. "Remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections pending grand jury indictment on three counts of aggravated felony battery, one count of attempted child endangerment, and twelve counts of grand larceny in the first degree. Remove him!"

"Alexander! Claire!" Daniel screamed as two burly court officers seized his arms, dragging him backward through the heavy wooden doors. "You can’t do this to me! I built your portfolio! Claire, you love me! Tell them to stop! CLAIRE!"

The feed cut to black.

Dominic closed his laptop with a quiet, satisfying click. "That takes care of the criminal side for this morning. Now... Alexander is about to handle the corporate autopsy."

Across town, in the 50th-floor boardroom of Pierce Holdings, the air was thick with the scent of high-grade espresso and impending corporate death.

The eleven board members and institutional partners sat in paralyzed silence. Daniel’s seat at the head of the mahogany table was empty. In his place sat Alexander Bennett.

Alexander didn't look angry. He looked bored, casually flipping through a leather-bound folder while Julian stood silently behind his chair, an imposing shadow against the panoramic glass window overlooking Wall Street.

"Gentlemen," Alexander began, his voice smooth, cultured, and terrifyingly calm. "As of eight o'clock this morning, Bennett Global Capital exercised its covenants under Section 4 of the mezzanine debt agreement. Due to Mr. Pierce’s felony indictment and the subsequent freezing of his personal assets by the State of New York, Pierce Holdings is officially in default on its seventy-five-million-dollar liquidity facility."

The vice-chairman, an older man named Sterling, swallowed hard. "Alexander... look, Daniel’s personal life is a disaster, we all see that. But the underlying assets of Pierce Holdings are sound! We have municipal contracts, real estate developments—"

"You had municipal contracts," Alexander corrected gently, sliding a printed sheet down the long table. "The city comptroller rescinded the municipal bond mandate thirty minutes ago based on the forensic fraud audit we delivered to the Attorney General's office. Furthermore, the real estate developments in Dubai? The ones Daniel told you were yielding twelve percent?"

Alexander paused, taking a slow sip of ice water.

"They were empty sand dunes, Sterling. Daniel was running a classic secondary Ponzi scheme, using Claire's private trust dividends to pay your quarterly distributions."

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the room. Two board members immediately pulled out their phones, their faces turning ash-white as the reality of their personal financial exposure crashed down upon them.

"So, here are your options," Alexander continued, resting his elbows on the table and clasping his hands together. "Option A: You allow the firm to enter Chapter 7 liquidation. The SEC will spend the next three years tearing through your personal tax returns, your offshore vehicles, and your communication logs with Daniel Pierce. Several of you will likely face secondary liability for criminal negligence."

"And Option B?" Sterling croaked, sweating through his three-thousand-dollar collar.

"Option B," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute command, "is that Bennett Global Capital acquires all viable assets of Pierce Holdings for one dollar. We absorb the municipal liabilities, we indemnify the board against secondary regulatory fallout, and we fire Daniel Pierce with cause, wiping out his equity shares entirely."

"That's... that's corporate cannibalism!" one of the younger partners sputtered. "Daniel built this firm over a decade! His equity alone is worth thirty million!"

Alexander turned his cold, predatory gaze onto the young partner. The man wilted instantly under the weight of that stare.

"Daniel Pierce used my sister's stolen inheritance to build this firm," Alexander said, each syllable ringing like an iron bell. "He assaulted my sister while she was carrying his child. He tried to convince the world she was insane so he could steal the rest of her family legacy."

Alexander stood up, towering over the boardroom table. Julian shifted forward half an inch, the sheer physical menace radiating off him silencing any lingering thought of resistance.

"You have ten minutes to sign the restructuring agreement, gentlemen," Alexander said, buttoning his jacket. "If the signatures are not on my desk by 10:15, I release the forensic audit to the Department of Justice, and Julian opens the doors to the FBI agents waiting in your lobby."

Alexander turned and walked out of the room, leaving the restructuring documents on the table.

He didn't need to look back. He knew they would sign.

Back at St. Catherine’s, the afternoon sun flooded Room 418.

I was sitting up in a comfortable armchair, Grace cradled securely against my chest, nursing quietly. The swelling in my face and hands had begun to subside dramatically; color had returned to my cheeks.

My phone—a new, secure device Dominic had provided that morning—chimed softly on the side table.

A single text message flashed on the screen from Alexander:

*The firm is dismantled. His equity is zero. The divorce papers have been served in his cell. Sleep well, Claire. Your daughter owns everything he ever touched.*

I looked down at Grace’s tiny, peaceful face. She let out a milk-drunk sigh, her tiny eyelashes fluttering as she drifted into a deep, safe slumber.

For the first time in seven years, I didn't feel the suffocating terror of Daniel’s shadow. I didn't feel the phantom ache of my sister’s betrayal.

I felt the immense, unyielding weight of the Bennett bloodline standing at my back. And for Daniel Pierce, the true nightmare had only just begun.
