Chapter 2 - The Midnight Desperation

Across town, in the penthouse suite of the Baccarat Hotel, Daniel Reed was pacing the floor like a caged, rabid wolf.

His hair, usually styled to perfection with three-hundred-dollar pomade, was a tangled mess where his fingers had repeatedly dragged through it. His silk shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, soaked through with nervous sweat. On the glass coffee table sat an empty bottle of Macallan 25 and an untouched plate of cold room service sliders.

On the plush velvet sofa, Olivia Grant was weeping uncontrollably, mascara streaking down her cheeks in jagged black rivers.

"You told me she was nobody!" Olivia wailed, clutching her temples. "You said she was an insecure, uneducated nobody from the suburbs who lived off your generosity! You told me she didn't even know what a stock option was! Daniel, she knew about OG Holdings! She knew about the Cayman account! How could she know about that unless she’s been tracking us?"

"Shut up!" Daniel roared, spinning around and slamming his crystal glass against the marble mantelpiece. The glass shattered into a hundred sparkling shards, scattering across the rug. "Just shut the hell up, Olivia! Do you think I need your whining right now? Do you have any idea what you did at JFK?"

Olivia flinched, shrinking back into the cushions. "What *I* did? She was touching your coat! She was acting like she owned the place!"

"She *does* own the place!" Daniel screamed, his face turning an apoplectic shade of scarlet. He closed the distance between them, leaning down until his eyes were wild and bloodshot, inches from hers. "Her father built Carter Technologies out of a garage in Silicon Valley and turned it into an enterprise giant! Chloe holds seventy-two percent of the voting equity in the family trust! I am the CEO only because she signed the management proxy three years ago! If she revokes that proxy, I am nothing! Do you understand? *Nothing!*"

Olivia shook her head, tears spilling down her chin. "No... no, but you're Daniel Reed. The media loves you. You're the one Horizon wants. Julian Thorne doesn't even know who Chloe Carter is!"

"It doesn't matter what Julian Thorne knows!" Daniel cried out, running his hands down his face in sheer agony. "If the board convenes without my authorization, if Arthur Vance brings out the forensic ledgers before the Horizon contract is inked... the SEC won't just fine us, Olivia. They will send federal marshals to march us out of the building in handcuffs!"

Olivia gasped, the reality of the situation finally piercing her narcissistic bubble. "Handcuffs? No... no, Daniel, I'm twenty-seven years old! I can't go to prison! I gave up my career at Edelman to come work for you! You said we'd be in Saint-Tropez by next week!"

"If you want to stay out of a federal penitentiary," Daniel snapped, grabbing his trench coat off the chair, "you need to pull yourself together right now."

"Where are you going?"

"I'm going to the Carter estate in Greenwich," Daniel said, his voice tightening with a mixture of desperation and malice. "Chloe is emotional. She's soft-hearted. She's always been weak when it comes to family, memories, and sentimental garbage. I just need to get in front of her. If I can get her alone, without Arthur Vance whispering in her ear, I can convince her to postpone the board meeting until after the Horizon signing."

"And if she won't listen to you?" Olivia asked, her voice shaking.

Daniel paused by the heavy mahogany doors of the suite. His eyes turned dark, calculating, and chillingly devoid of humanity.

"She will listen," Daniel murmured. "She signed the proxy once. She can sign an extension. One way or another, she will sign."

By 1:30 AM, Daniel’s black Mercedes S-Class was barreling down the winding, tree-lined roads of Greenwich, Connecticut. Rain lashed against the windshield in violent sheets, the wipers slapping back and forth in a frantic, rhythmic tempo.

Daniel’s mind was racing through scenarios at lightning speed.

He had spent three years calculating this endgame. Three years of enduring Arthur Vance’s condescending glares during corporate audits. Three years of playing the devoted, attentive husband while quietly rerouting Carter-Reed’s most valuable intellectual property into Luxembourg shell accounts. He had convinced himself that he deserved every single penny. William Carter was dead; why should an introverted, grieving daughter inherit an empire that he, Daniel Reed, had modernized and presented to Wall Street?

He pulled up to the wrought-iron security gates of the Carter estate—a magnificent, thirty-acre Georgian manor that had been in the Carter family for two generations.

He rolled down his window and tapped his master access transponder against the gate scanner.

*BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.*

A red light flashed on the digital pillar. The gates remained firmly, immovably closed.

Daniel frowned, cursing under his breath. He tapped the transponder again.

*ACCESS DENIED.*

"Damn it!" Daniel slammed the steering wheel with his palm. He jumped out of the car into the pouring rain, shielding his eyes with his sleeve, and punched his personal six-digit security code into the gate keypad.

*INVALID CREDENTIALS.*

"What the hell is going on?" Daniel yelled into the storm. He reached for the brass intercom button beside the call box and pushed it down hard.

A second later, the speaker crackled to life.

"Carter Residence security," a cold, calm voice answered. It wasn't the regular night guard, Higgins. It was Robert Miller, the retired Secret Service officer who had served as William Carter’s personal head of security for twenty years.

"Miller! It's Daniel," Daniel shouted through the rain, his voice soaked in false authority. "Open the gate immediately. The keypad is malfunctioning."

"The system is functioning within normal parameters, Mr. Reed," Miller’s voice replied evenly. "Your access credentials were systematically purged from the primary network at twenty-three hundred hours tonight."

Daniel felt a cold knot tighten in his gut. "Purged? Purged by whose authority? I am the master of this house! I am Chloe's husband!"

"By direct written executive order of Mrs. Chloe Carter, Trustee and Sole Beneficiary of the William Carter Living Estate," Miller responded without a flicker of emotion. "You are officially classified as a trespasser on private property, Mr. Reed."

"Let me speak to Chloe!" Daniel bellowed, shaking the iron bars with both hands. Rain soaked through his suit, plastering his hair to his skull. "Chloe! Chloe, I know you can hear me! Open this damn gate! We need to talk! You cannot do this to me!"

From the other end of the long, cobblestone driveway, three sets of blinding xenon headlights flickered to life. Three black SUVs from a private executive protection firm slowly rolled toward the gate, parking ten yards back, their engines purring menacingly in the dark.

Miller’s voice came through the intercom one last time, cold and final.

"Mrs. Carter has declined to speak with you. Furthermore, she has instructed me to inform you that if your vehicle remains within fifty yards of this perimeter in two minutes, the Greenwich Police Department will be dispatched to arrest you for criminal trespass and violation of an emergency protective order."

"Protective order?" Daniel’s voice squeaked in pure panic. "She filed a protective order?!"

"Have a safe drive back to the city, Mr. Reed."

The intercom went dead with a soft click.

Daniel stood there in the downpour, the headlights of the security SUVs illuminating him like a spotlight on an exposed criminal. The rain washed away the last shreds of his polished, Fortune 500 veneer, leaving behind a terrified, cornered grifter staring into the abyss of complete annihilation.

He stumbled back to his car, threw himself into the driver's seat, and slammed the door shut.

His phone began to vibrate violently in the center console. He snatched it up, hoping against hope that it was Chloe.

The caller ID displayed the name: **JULIAN THORNE (HORIZON VENTURES).**

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. He swallowed the bitter bile rising in his throat, forced his voice into its smoothest, most confident executive cadence, and hit answer.

"Julian! My friend! It’s late—have you landed in New York?"

"Daniel," Julian Thorne’s voice was crisp, British, and utterly devoid of the warmth they had shared during dinner at the Savoy two weeks ago. "We have a problem."

"A problem? What kind of problem?" Daniel’s knuckles turned white around the steering wheel.

"Thirty minutes ago, the board of directors of Horizon Ventures received an encrypted dispatch from the legal offices of Vance & Sterling," Julian said, his words measured and precise. "Attached were twenty-four internal Carter-Reed transaction logs and a preliminary notice of patent ownership dispute concerning the Carter Core Quantum Encryption engine."

Daniel’s vision blurred. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. "Julian... that’s... that’s absurd. That’s just disgruntled internal corporate politics. My wife—"

"I don't care about your wife, Daniel," Julian cut him off sharply. "What I care about is whether I am walking into Carter-Reed headquarters at ten o'clock tomorrow to sign a ten-billion-dollar acquisition, or whether I am walking into an SEC entrapment sting."

"I swear to you, Julian, everything is in order!" Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking into a desperate octave. "I am the CEO! I hold the signing authority!"

"You have until 9:00 AM to deliver a formal, unencumbered title warranty signed by Arthur Vance and the primary trustee, Daniel," Julian said coldly. "If that document is not on my tablet before the market opens, Horizon will not only walk away from the transaction—we will file a fifty-million-dollar breach of good faith suit against you personally. See you in the morning."

The line went dead.

Daniel dropped the phone onto the passenger seat. He stared at his trembling hands in the darkness of the car, the windshield wipers continuing their merciless, mechanical sweep.

The trap had snapped shut. And morning was only six hours away.
