Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Ambush

The atmosphere inside the Metropolitan Club was electric with scandal. Cameras from three different high-society lifestyle publications were flashing relentlessly, capturing every agonizing micro-expression of terror on Cynthia Belmont’s face.

"Harrison," I said, addressing the stunned patriarch of the Belmont family while looking directly into the crowd. "Did you know that while your daughter was preparing to assume leadership of your charitable foundation, she was actively conspiring with Richard Whitmore to commit grand larceny and federal wire fraud?"

"What are you talking about?!" Harrison roared, his face purpling with rage and embarrassment. "This is an outrage! Security! Remove these people!"

Nobody moved. Marcus and our security team stood at the perimeter doors with their arms crossed; the venue's private security guards didn't dare take a single step forward against the Bennett family.

"Next slide, Julian," I said calmly.

The screen shifted.

Now displayed were copies of internal banking transfers from the Swiss bank accounts of Belmont Pharma, cross-referenced with the fraudulent ninety-million-dollar loan Richard had executed using my forged signature.

"For the past twelve months," I announced, my voice carrying cleanly to every corner of the frozen room, "Richard Whitmore and Cynthia Belmont have been systematically embezzling funds from Whitmore Industries and routing them through Belmont Pharma shell corporations. Their goal was simple: use my forged name as collateral to absorb ninety million dollars in toxic debt, force Whitmore Industries into bankruptcy, and use the stolen thirty million dollars in offshore kickbacks to fund a joint pharmaceutical venture in Panama."

Cynthia began hyperventilating, backing away toward the velvet curtains at the rear of the stage. "It's a lie! It's all lies! Richard made me do it! He told me Emily was nobody! He told me she was an orphan who wouldn't have the legal resources to fight back!"

At the back of the room, Richard broke through the crowd, completely unhinged.

"Cynthia, you bitch!" Richard screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. He sprinted down the aisle, knocking over two cocktail tables, glass crashing everywhere. "You came up with the shell corporation idea! You said your father had the offshore lawyers to hide the trail!"

"Stay away from me, you monster!" Cynthia screamed back, tears ruining her mascara. "You hit your wife! You're a disgusting, broke loser! Dad, call the police! He's crazy!"

Richard reached the stage, his eyes bloodshot, his face twisted in a mask of absolute insanity. He pointed a shaking, accusing finger at me.

"You did this!" Richard howled, lunging toward the stairs. "You ruined my life! You planned this from the very beginning, you manipulative bitch! I should have broken your neck instead of just slapping you!"

He never made it up the third step.

Marcus moved like a shadow. With blinding speed, Marcus caught Richard's outstretched arm, twisted it behind his back with a sickening *POP*, and slammed Richard face-first onto the polished hardwood of the stage.

Richard let out an agonized shriek as his dislocated shoulder gave out.

Before anyone could scream, the rear doors of the ballroom swung open once again.

This time, it wasn't my family.

Ten agents in dark blue windbreakers with bold yellow letters across the back strode into the room: **FBI**. Behind them were two senior prosecutors from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

The lead agent, Special Agent Miller, walked briskly up the aisle, flashing his badge directly at Charles Whitmore, who had collapsed into an empty chair, clutching his chest.

"Charles Whitmore? Richard Whitmore?" Agent Miller announced, his voice slicing through the chaos. "We have federal warrants for your arrest on twenty-four counts of securities fraud, bank fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

Two agents knelt beside Marcus, hauling Richard roughly to his feet. Cold steel handcuffs clicked securely around Richard's wrists. Richard sobbed uncontrollably, blood dripping from his nose onto the stage where moments earlier Cynthia had boasted of high society morality.

Agent Miller then turned his gaze toward Cynthia Belmont.

"Cynthia Belmont?"

Cynthia froze, clutching the curtain, her eyes wide with animal terror. "No... no, please! I'm a Belmont! My father is—"

"Cynthia Belmont, you are also under arrest as a co-conspirator in the Vance Maritime Trust embezzlement and illegal offshore tax evasion schemes," Agent Miller said coldly. "Handcuff her."

A female agent stepped forward, turned Cynthia around, and snapped the cuffs behind her ice-blue satin gown.

Harrison Belmont looked like a man who had suffered a massive stroke. He slumped against the podium, covering his face with his hands as the society photographers captured the definitive downfall of two of New York's oldest dynasties.

I stepped down from the stage, my emerald gown trailing behind me like liquid velvet.

As the agents led Richard past me, he stopped. He looked at me through swollen, tear-filled eyes, his lips trembling, his spirit completely broken.

"Emily..." he wept, his voice barely a squeak. "Please... talk to your father. Tell them it was a mistake. I'll do anything. I'll clean your shoes. I'll beg for forgiveness on national television. Please don't let them send me to prison. Please..."

I looked at the man who had terrorized my life for five years.

I felt no hatred. I felt no burning desire for further violence. I only felt the clean, crystalline indifference of a woman who had finally reclaimed her soul.

"You told me to know my place, Richard," I said softly, looking directly into his hollow eyes.

I reached out, gently tapping the bruised skin of my cheek.

May you like

"This was my place all along. And yours is behind bars."
