Chapter 1 - The First Dance and the Pink Mist

The romantic notes of our first dance song—a gentle acoustic melody Daniel and I had spent weeks selecting—drifted through the grand ballroom. Daniel’s hands rested warmly on my waist, and as he looked down at me with deep, unshakeable affection, I felt the residual tension of the past few weeks begin to melt away. For twenty minutes, I had dared to believe we might actually get through our wedding night without a catastrophic family disaster.

Then the music stuttered.

It wasn't a technical glitch. The DJ—a seasoned professional we had hired at considerable expense—suddenly froze, his hands hovering over his mixing deck, looking frantically toward the side entrance of the ballroom.

From the shadows near the catering doors, a pair of individuals in black event uniforms emerged, wheeling heavy metal canisters directly onto the edge of our pristine hardwood dance floor.

Before Daniel or I could take another step, a sharp, pressurized hiss echoed across the high ceiling.

HIIISSSSSSSS.

A thick, opaque cloud of violently pink smoke erupted into the air, billowing outward and instantly coating our imported white floral arrangements, our wedding cake table, and the shoulders of my custom lace gown in a fine, powdery, bubblegum-colored residue.

Around the room, gasps of shock rippled through our ninety-nine guests. Down at table three, my seventy-eight-year-old grandmother began coughing frantically, swatting at the pink haze with her cloth napkin.

And right there in the direct center of the pink-smoked dance floor stood my younger sister, Khloe.

She wore a tight, form-fitting dress that aggressively flirted with bridal etiquette, her hand resting dramatically over her completely flat stomach. Beside her, her boyfriend Tyler grinned like an idiot, holding a spent pneumatic smoke cannon.

The DJ, realizing he had been ambushed by an unauthorized vendor, quickly killed the music, leaving the ballroom in a stunned, suffocating silence.

Khloe didn't wait for an introduction. She grabbed a wireless microphone from the side table, her voice screeching feedback through the massive sound system before she settled into a triumphant, attention-seeking pitch.

“Since traveling will become so much harder for me later in the pregnancy,” Khloe announced, her voice echoing shrilly through the ballroom as she gestured wildly toward the pink smoke, “we have a second announcement! The honeymoon in Greece is ours! Mom already swapped the names on the first-class tickets!”

Silence fell like a lead weight.

My mother, Beatrice, beamed from the head table, clapping her hands together with uncontainable glee. My father nodded sagely, looking around the room as if he had just orchestrated a brilliant diplomatic treaty.

Daniel took a sharp, distinct inhale beside me—his professional courtroom inhale.

I looked at my husband. He didn't look angry; he looked remarkably calm, his eyes gleaming with cold, lethal support. He squeezed my hand once.

I let go of his hand, smoothed down the front of my wedding gown—brushing off a layer of tacky pink dust—and walked slowly across the dance floor toward my sister.

Khloe watched me approach, her smile widening into an oily smirk, genuinely believing I was walking over to embrace her and hand over my life to feed her endless entitlement.

I reached out, gently sliding the heavy silver microphone from her manicured fingers.

“Wow,” I said into the mic. The lingering whispers in the room died instantly. I swept my gaze across the ballroom, making dead-eye contact with every single guest. “Well, since we are in the spirit of sharing public family announcements tonight... I have a few updates of my own.”

Behind me, Daniel smiled a dark, predatory smile.

My mother’s confident smirk vanished. The air in the room grew instantly colder. But little did they know, the pink smoke was merely the opening act of an execution they would never see coming.
