Chapter 4 - The Recovery of the Will

Two weeks later.

The autumn wind blew gold and red leaves across the lawn of my parents' old craftsman house on the outskirts of Oakridge.

Following the arrests of Margaret and Trevor, my brother Ethan and I had moved Emma and my belongings out of the house I had shared with Trevor. We moved back into my childhood home—a warm, sunlit house with a large backyard, a tire swing, and wide porches where my late father used to read the Sunday morning paper.

Emma sat at the low wooden coffee table in the sunroom, happily coloring in a picture book with her bright crayons.

For two weeks, a child trauma specialist had visited our house every afternoon. Emma was sleeping through the night again. The nightmares about the "white jar" were fading, replaced by the quiet, unshakeable security of being surrounded by people who truly loved her.

My attorney, Sarah Vance, sat at the kitchen counter, placing a thick stack of legal documents in front of me.

"Clara," Sarah said gently. "The grand jury met this morning. They returned a formal Twelve-Count Indictment against Margaret Miller and Trevor Miller."

"What are the formal charges?" I asked, sipping my tea.

"For Margaret: Two Counts of First-Degree Capital Murder, One Count of Attempted Murder regarding Emma, One Count of Child Endangerment, and One Count of Felony Assault for the attack on you at the funeral," Sarah read clearly. "The prosecutor is officially seeking the death penalty."

I closed my eyes, taking a deep, steady breath. "And Trevor?"

"For Trevor: Two Counts of Complicity to Capital Murder, Two Counts of Involuntary Manslaughter, One Count of Grand Larceny, and One Count of Insurance Fraud," Sarah stated. "His defense attorney tried to request a bail reduction this morning. The judge denied it instantly. He will remain in county custody pending trial."

Sarah pulled out a secondary blue folder.

"Furthermore," Sarah continued, a small, triumphant smile breaking across her face, "we have formally executed an Emergency Asset Seizure against Margaret’s personal estate and Trevor’s remaining firm equity under the State Slayer Statute."

"Which means?"

"Which means," Sarah explained, "neither Margaret nor Trevor can use one single dollar of their assets, property, or trust funds for their legal defense. Every asset they owned has been permanently frozen and transferred into an irrevocable trust for Emma’s future health, education, and security."

I looked out the sunroom window at my daughter, who was holding up a picture of a bright yellow sun she had drawn for me.

"They tried to erase my family for money," I whispered.

"And instead," Sarah said softly, "they gave your daughter complete financial independence for the rest of her life."
