Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Light

One year later. Summer.
The outdoor pool at the Raleigh Community Recreation Center was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight.
The area was alive with activity—children splashing, parents sitting on lounge chairs under large umbrellas, and the smell of sunscreen and fresh lemonade in the air.
Standing at the edge of the deep end, wearing a bright turquoise swimsuit, was thirteen-year-old Rowan.
Her left knee bore two faint, silver surgical scars near the growth plate—tiny badges of courage that marked where the titanium pins had stabilized her joint. But she wasn't hiding them. She stood tall, fearless, her posture straight and proud.
Standing beside her was twelve-year-old Fiona, wearing a matching pink swimsuit, looking down at the clear blue water with a small, hesitant smile.
"Are you sure you want to jump, Rowan?" Fiona asked softly, holding Rowan's hand.
Rowan looked at her little friend, her brown eyes bright with a deep, unshakeable confidence.
"I'm sure, Fiona," Rowan smiled, squeezing her hand tight. "The water isn't scary when you jump in on your own terms."
Down on the lounge chairs, Gavin and I stood up, holding our breath, watching them.
Rowan looked at Fiona. "On three?"
"On three!" Fiona giggled.
"One... two... THREE!"
Both girls leaped off the edge together, soaring through the warm summer air, holding hands, and hitting the water with a massive, triumphant splash.
A second later, both girls surfaced near the lane line, tossing their wet hair back, laughing loudly as they kicked their legs against the clear blue water.
I stood near the pool edge, tears of pure, soaring joy running down my cheeks, as my brave, beautiful daughter waved her arm high under the bright North Carolina sun.

Corin was serving her seven-year prison sentence in a cold facility seventy miles away. The toxic past was crushed under the weight of truth and justice.
And standing in the warm, glorious light of our true home, my daughter and I were safe, unbroken, and completely, wonderfully free.
