Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Crown

Six months later.

The trial lasted four days.

In the end, the jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a unanimous verdict: Guilty on all counts of second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment.

Because of the premeditated nature of the custom-ordered steel spikes, Judge Sterling handed down a sentence of four years in a state correctional facility, denying the defense's motion for probation.

As the bailiffs placed the handcuffs on Sofia and led her out of the courtroom in a standard orange jumpsuit, my mother—who had spent the entire trial crying in the back row—rushed toward the aisle, calling out my sister's name in despair.

I didn't gloat. I didn't celebrate. I simply stood up, buttoned my blazer, and walked out into the bright autumn sunlight outside the courthouse steps.

Daniel was waiting for me near the marble fountain, holding a cup of hot coffee and smiling broadly.

"It's over," Daniel said, handing me the coffee. "She’s heading upstate. And your mother..."

"What about Mom?" I asked.

"She finally admitted to me yesterday that she knew Sofia had always crossed lines, but she was too terrified of the family drama to ever stop her," Daniel said quietly. "She asked if she could take you out to dinner to apologize."

I looked out across the bustling Princeton street, watching the autumn leaves drift down through the crisp air. The heavy knot that had lived in my chest for my entire life finally dissolved into thin air.

For thirty years, I had believed that my role in life was to bow my head, absorb the blows, and smile while my sister took the spotlight. I had believed that family loyalty meant sacrificing your own safety to protect an abuser's ego.

I took a warm sip of coffee and touched the top of my head where the scar had finally healed, smooth and clean beneath my hair.

"Tell her I’m busy tonight, Daniel," I smiled softly, looking up at the bright, clear blue sky. "I'm finally building a life where no one gets to wear a crown at my expense."
