Chapter 2 - The Uncut Tape

By 10:30 AM, I was sitting in the private administrative office of The Grand Pavilion—the event hall where Sienna’s birthday had been held twelve hours earlier.
Beside me sat Marcus Vance, the owner of the venue and an old college friend of my late husband. Across the desk, two large LED monitors displayed multiple camera angles from the main ballroom, the entryway hallway, and the photo backdrop area.
"I went back through the master hard drive the moment you called, Lauren," Marcus said, clicking his mouse to highlight a red timeline bar on the screen. "Your sister didn't just record on her phone. Our high-definition ceiling cameras record 4K video with full ambient directional audio."
Marcus hit play.
The screen lit up with crystal-clear footage from Camera 3, positioned directly above the entrance doors.
At 6:42 PM—twenty minutes before the guests arrived—Dany and Payton were seen entering the empty hall accompanied by an event decorator. On the audio track, Dany’s voice was as loud and clear as if she were standing in the room with us.
"Make sure the tripod is hidden behind the floral arch, Payton," Dany’s recorded voice instructed sharply. "When Sienna comes out, you stand right in front of her. Don't move until she looks upset. If she touches you or grabs for the flowers, shrink back like you're scared. I need her looking aggressive on camera."
"Mom, what if Aunt Lauren says something?" Payton’s voice asked, sounding nervous.
"Your grandmother is handling Lauren," Dany sneered. "Susan promised she’d order Sienna to yield first. Once Sienna breaks down on camera, the scholarship committee won't touch her with a ten-foot pole."
I sat back in the leather chair, my hands clenching into tight fists until my fingernails bit into my palms.
There it was. Uncut, unedited, high-definition evidence of a criminal conspiracy to defame a minor, commit fraud, and execute tortious interference with an academic scholarship.
"Marcus," I said, my voice steady and deadly calm. "Can you export every single camera angle, with certified cryptographic time-stamps, to an encrypted drive?"
"Already done, Lauren," Marcus replied, sliding a sleek silver USB drive across the desk toward me. "And I’ve already had our corporate legal team notarize the affidavit verifying the authenticity of the footage."
I picked up the drive. It felt cool and heavy in my palm—a bullet loaded directly into the chamber of truth.

"Are you taking this to the school board on Monday?" Marcus asked.
"No," I replied, looking up at him with a quiet, lethal smile. "The school board is step two. Step one is Sunday dinner at my mother’s house."
