Chapter 7 - Turning the Tables

At 9:30 AM, Marcus Vance slid an iced coffee across his mahogany desk toward me. He looked sharp, clad in a charcoal three-piece suit, with three paralegals buzzing around his glass-walled conference room.
“The judge signed the emergency injunction twenty minutes ago,” Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair. “All accounts associated with Benjamin Miller, Golden Key Holdings, and any subsidiary accounts have been frozen pending an audit. He can't buy a pack of gum right now without a court order.”
“What about the house?” I asked.
“The county clerk verified that your pre-marital deed remains uncontested. The home equity line Ben opened was processed using an illegitimate electronic signature notary service. We’ve already contacted the bank’s fraud division. The bank is terrified of a federal compliance lawsuit, so they’ve already reversed the debt against your title and placed the liability squarely on Ben personally.”
A heavy weight lifted from my lungs, but the job wasn't finished.
“What about the music academy?”
Marcus smiled thinly. “I took the liberty of drafting a formal notification letter to their Board of Trustees, accompanied by the wire transfer tracing sheet and a copy of the criminal fraud report we filed with the county prosecutor this morning. We haven't sent it yet. I wanted to give you the courtesy of making that call.”
I looked out the window over the city skyline. I thought about Lily standing alone by that table, clutching an empty paper plate while her cousins gorged themselves on food bought with her future.
I thought about Vanessa’s smug face telling an eight-year-old child: *“Ask your mother to get you something.”*
“Send it,” I said.
Marcus hit *Send* on his computer terminal without blinking.
My phone immediately began vibrating in my purse. The caller ID flashed: *Vanessa (Mobile)*.
I let it ring until it went to voicemail. Three seconds later, another call came in. Then a text message:
*CLAIRE PICK UP RIGHT NOW! WHAT DID YOU DO?! THE HEADMASTER JUST CALLED MY HUSBAND! JONAH IS HYSTERICAL! PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE!*
I didn't reply.
Instead, I dialed the local non-emergency police dispatch.
“Hello,” I said evenly. “My name is Claire Montgomery. I am currently the sole resident of 742 Evergreen Terrace. I have reason to believe that a family member who was legally removed from the premises earlier this morning may attempt to trespass or damage property within the next hour. I would like to request a patrol car in the area.”
“We have an officer two blocks away, ma’am,” the dispatcher replied. “We will dispatch them immediately.”

I looked at Marcus. “Let’s go watch the show.”
