Chapter 4 - The Sound of Blood

The door swung open, revealing Victor Kane.

He didn't knock. He stood in the doorway, a tumbler of whiskey in one hand, his tailored suit jacket unbuttoned. His cold, predatory eyes swept across my room, lingering on the rumpled bedsheets, the open bathroom door, and finally settling on me.

I pulled the duvet up to my chin, my heart racing. “What are you doing in here? Mr. Vale said this was private.”

Victor took a slow sip of his whiskey, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him with his heel. The latch clicked shut with a sound like a guillotine.

“Dominic is an old romantic at heart,” Victor sneered, his voice low and grating. “He sees a pretty little waitress who can wave her hands at his brain-dead son, and he thinks he found an easy button. But I don't believe in miracles, Miss Mercer. I believe in leverage. And I believe in blood.”

He walked toward the bed, circling it like a hyena.

“Grigori swore he was hit from behind by a professional,” Victor continued, tapping his whiskey glass against the mahogany bedpost. “A professional who broke his windpipe with an open-palm strike and dislocated his shoulder with a military joint lock. Now, tell me, sweetheart... how does a twenty-eight-year-old diner waitress take down a two-hundred-and-forty-pound Chechen enforcer?”

“I told Dominic!” I stammered, fighting to keep my voice from breaking. “There were two men! They were robbing the back alley!”

“Yeah. That’s what you said.” Victor leaned down suddenly, his face inches from mine. I could smell the sour stench of bourbon on his breath. “Except the alley surveillance cameras at the auto shop across the street were wiped clean twenty minutes before Grigori woke up. Someone hacked the local server. Someone who knew the routing protocols of this entire district.”

My blood turned to ice. Caleb had erased the footage. But in doing so, he had left a ghost in the machine—and Victor Kane was smart enough to smell the smoke.

“You’re an operative,” Victor hissed, reaching out a leather-gloved hand and gripping my jaw with bruising force. “Who sent you? Was it the Moretti family? The FBI? Who’s paying you to manipulate that idiot boy?”

“Let go of me!” I gasped, twisting in his grip. “I don't know what you’re talking about!”

Victor’s fingers dug deeper into my bone. “You think you’re smart? Let me tell you how this ends, Hannah. Next Thursday, Caleb signs the transfer papers. The second his signature hits the page, he’s going to have a tragic, fatal overdose in the back of a limousine. And you? You’re going to be in the trunk with a bullet behind your ear.”

He pulled a silver switchblade from his pocket. With a sharp *flick*, a four-inch blade gleamed in the moonlight.

“I don't wait for Thursday,” Victor whispered, resting the flat of the cold steel against my throat. “Tell me who you work for, or I start carving off pieces of that pretty face until you remember.”

A cold bead of sweat trickled down my neck, touching the edge of the blade.

I couldn't scream. If I screamed, Caleb would come through that adjoining door. And if Caleb attacked Victor, the entire cover would be blown, the house guards would swarm, and we would both be dead before sunrise.

*I have to hold out,* I thought desperately. *I can’t break.*

“I work... at Bellamy’s Steakhouse,” I choked out, staring directly into Victor’s venomous eyes. “Table Four. You ordered the bourbon. And you’re a coward who threatens women because you’re terrified of an old man who’s about to replace you.”

Victor’s eyes widened with murderous rage. “You little b—”

The heavy connecting door between my room and Caleb’s didn't just open.

It shattered.

The wooden latch sheared off with an explosive crack. A dark figure crossed the ten feet of carpet in less than half a second.

Before Victor could even turn his head, Caleb’s bare hand clamped around Victor’s throat like a hydraulic vise.

Caleb didn't make a sound. His face was a mask of cold, primordial fury. With terrifying, superhuman leverage, Caleb lifted Victor Kane—a two-hundred-pound grown man—clean off his feet and slammed him spine-first into the wall. The impact knocked the breath from Victor’s lungs in a wet gasp, the whiskey glass shattering on the hardwood floor, the switchblade clattering harmlessly away under the bed.

Victor’s eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated shock. He clawed frantically at Caleb’s arm, his fingers digging into Caleb’s forearm, but Caleb’s grip didn't budge a millimeter.

Caleb leaned in, his face inches from Victor’s terrified, suffocating countenance.

For the first time in fourteen years, Caleb didn't play the fool.

He didn't speak with his voice. Instead, with his free hand, Caleb smoothly reached into Victor’s jacket pocket, withdrew Victor’s own personal snub-nosed revolver, thumbed the hammer back with a distinct *click*, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the center of Victor’s forehead.

Victor froze. The terror in the underboss’s eyes was absolute. He was looking at the boy he had kicked, mocked, and plotted to murder—and finding an apex predator staring back at him.

Caleb held Victor pinned against the wall for five agonizing seconds.

Then, Caleb shifted his fingers on the gun, pointing the barrel toward the open doorway that led back to the main hallway.

*Get out,* Caleb’s expression said with crystalline clarity. *Or die here.*

Caleb released his chokehold. Victor crumpled to the floor, gasping for air, clutching his bruised throat, staring up at Caleb as if looking at the devil himself.

“You...” Victor wheezed, his voice trembling with disbelief. “You can... you’re not—”

Caleb raised his left hand. In three brutally fast, unmistakable signs, he delivered his message:

*Speak. And I kill you now.*

Victor Kane scrambled backward on his hands and knees, terror overriding every ounce of his arrogance. He didn't say a word. He knew that if he shouted for the guards, Caleb would pull the trigger before anyone reached the stairs, and whatever secret Caleb was holding would die with them both. Victor scrambled to his feet, lunged through the doorway, and fled down the darkened hallway like a whipped dog.

The silence that followed was deafening.

I was shaking violently on the bed, my hands pressed against my mouth to stifle my sobs.

Caleb quickly engaged the deadbolt on the shattered door frame using a chair wedge. Then he turned around, dropping the revolver onto the bedside table.

He rushed to the bed, falling to his knees beside me.

His hands reached out, hovering hesitantly over my shoulders, terrified that touching me might frighten me further.

*Did he cut you?* he signed, his hands shaking with an adrenaline tremor I had never seen in him before. *Are you hurt? Hannah, please look at me.*

I couldn't sign. The terror had locked my muscles.

Instead, I lunged forward, throwing my arms around Caleb’s neck, burying my face into his shoulder.

Caleb stiffened in shock for a fraction of a second. Then, a low, ragged breath escaped his chest, and his arms wrapped around me tightly, lifting me against him, holding me as if I were the only real thing in a crumbling universe.

I felt the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against my cheek. I felt the heat of his skin, the strength of the arms that had just dismantled Chicago’s deadliest underboss, holding me with infinite gentleness.

“He knows,” I whispered against his neck, my tears soaking his shirt. “Caleb... Victor knows you’re faking. He’s going to Dominic.”

Caleb pulled back slightly, his hands coming up to cup my face. His thumbs gently brushed away my tears. He looked into my eyes, reading my lips in the pale moonlight.

He shook his head firmly.

*Victor won't tell Dominic,* Caleb signed, his eyes blazing with cold certainty.

*Why not?* I signed, sniffing back my tears.

*Because Victor wants Dominic dead,* Caleb signed. *Victor was going to frame me for the federal crimes so he could take over the syndicate himself. If Victor tells Dominic I am awake, Dominic will cancel the transfer, change his will, and kill Victor for failing to secure the perimeter. Victor will keep silent until the gala. He will try to kill us both there, in public, in the chaos.*

*Then we have no time,* I signed, terror gripping me anew. *The gala is tomorrow night.*

Caleb leaned his forehead against mine. For a long, quiet moment, we stayed like that, sharing breath in the dark.

*Tomorrow night, it all ends,* Caleb signed, his breath warm against my lips. *The federal strike team is confirmed. Victor will bring his men. Dominic will bring his greed. And I will bring the truth.*

He pulled back, his dark eyes searching mine with a tenderness that made my soul ache.

*Whatever happens tomorrow, Hannah... stay behind me. I swore on my mother's memory I would protect you. But I swear on my own life... you will walk out of that ballroom free.*

I caught his hands, lacing my fingers through his.

*We walk out together,* I signed. *Or not at all.*

A slow, breathtaking smile broke across Caleb’s face—not the mocking smirk he gave the world, but a radiant, genuine smile of a man who had finally found his home in the silence.

He leaned in, and in the quiet of that shadowed fortress, his lips met mine in a soft, fierce, unforgettable kiss.
