Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

One year later. October 2026.

The autumn sun cast a bright, warm golden light across the floor-to-ceiling windows of a gorgeous, high-rise penthouse office overlooking the Boston harbor.

The brass sign beside the heavy oak double doors read:

VANCE & PENDELTON STRATEGIC CONSULTING

Claire Vance — Chief Executive Officer

My private consulting firm—backed by my family's trust and expanded through my own brilliant corporate strategy—had exploded into one of the top supply-chain management agencies on the East Coast, handling major international contracts across four continents.

I sat behind my sleek walnut desk, wearing a stunning cream silk blouse and trousers, reviewing a fifty-million-dollar maritime logistics charter.

My door opened softly.

In walked my executive assistant, Marcus, carrying a fresh cup of hazelnut coffee and a tablet.

"Good morning, Ms. Vance," Marcus smiled warmly, setting the coffee on my desk. "The final legal updates regarding the Braddock audit just came through from Attorney Sterling’s office."

"Go ahead, Marcus," I said, sipping my coffee.

"Ryan Braddock’s federal trial concluded yesterday in Chicago," Marcus reported flatly. "He was convicted on two counts of corporate wire fraud and tax evasion, receiving a thirty-six-month sentence in a federal correctional facility. His former secretary, Chloe, was ordered to pay forty thousand dollars in civil restitution."

I looked at the digital report for two seconds, closed the file, and set the tablet down.

There was no anger in my heart. No malice. Only a vast, radiant, wonderful peace—the quiet satisfaction of a woman who had cut away a parasite and claimed her true destiny.

My phone chimed on the desk.

It was a text message from Uncle Arthur:

Arthur: Claire, my dear! The board just unanimously approved your appointment to the Executive Advisory Council at Pendelton Global. Dinner at the club tonight at seven to celebrate!

I smiled, typing a quick reply:

Claire: I’ll bring the champagne, Uncle Arthur. See you at seven.

I stood up from my desk, walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and looked out over the deep blue waters of Boston harbor, sparkling brightly under the clear autumn sky.

The toxic marriage was buried. The liar was behind iron bars where he belonged.

And standing tall in the bright, glorious light of my true life, I was safe, unbroken, and completely, wonderfully free.
