Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Evelyn Carter stepped over to the executive desk, plugged Lily’s encrypted black drive into Richard’s master terminal, and tapped a series of security overrides.
The sixty-five-inch digital display mounted on the wall lit up, casting a sharp blue light over the room.
Within three seconds, thousands of financial documents, wire transfer routing sheets, audio recordings, and high-definition surveillance clips began populating the screen in a rapid, terrifying waterfall of evidence.
"This is an automated forensic ledger compiled by the Swiss Federal Banking Authority," Evelyn announced, her voice calm and analytical as she scrolled through the files. "Every transaction executed by Victoria Sterling under the Whitmore Charitable Trust over the past seven years has been tracked."
Victoria shook her head violently. "Fake! It’s all forged! She bought those documents on the dark web!"
"Paragraph four," Eleanor spoke calmly, pointing her finger toward the screen. "Look at the primary beneficiary node for Apex Horizon, Victoria."
Evelyn zoomed in on a specific document—a confidential corporate registry from a private bank in Geneva.
The document displayed the master signature for Apex Horizon, the shell corporation that had drained seventy-five million dollars from the Whitmore accounts over six years.
Printed at the bottom of the registration page, complete with a notarized passport stamp and a thumb-print verification, was the full legal name of the owner: VICTORIA BEATRICE STERLING.
Below it was a secondary clause detailing a ten-million-dollar wire transfer executed four days prior—a transfer designed to drain the remaining liquid reserves of the Whitmore Family Estate on the exact night of Richard's anniversary gala.
Richard stared at the screen. The financial betrayal was staggering, but the personal horror was far worse.
For five years, Victoria had sat at his dinner table. She had organized his calendar, managed his children's private schooling, offered comforting words on the anniversaries of Eleanor’s "death," and positioned herself as the indispensable pillar of his life.
"You monster," Richard whispered, stepping toward Victoria.
"Richard, please!" Victoria sobbed, dropping to her knees as the guards released her arms. She reached out, trying to grab the hem of his trousers. "I did it for us! Your father left you with massive tax liabilities! I had to move the money into offshore trusts to protect it from federal auditors! I was keeping the family safe!"
"You tried to murder my wife," Richard said, his voice shaking with a fury so deep it vibrated through the floorboards.
"I didn't!" Victoria wept hysterically. "It was an accident! The driver I hired... he was only supposed to force her car off the road to scare her! I didn't know she would go over the bridge!"
The room went dead silent.
Victoria froze, her own words echoing back to her in the quiet study. She looked up, realizing in one horrifying second that she had just delivered a full, unprompted confession of attempted murder in front of six witnesses, including a former federal investigator and two high-definition security cameras.
Eleanor walked slowly over to the desk, picked up her phone, and tapped a speed-dial button.

"Assistant Director Vance," Eleanor said calmly into the receiver. "We have the confession on tape. You can send the federal marshals in now."
Outside the heavy bulletproof windows of the study, the dark night sky was suddenly illuminated by dozens of flashing red and blue lights. The wail of federal sirens bounced off the stone walls of the estate as six armored SUVs pulled up the circular driveway below.
