Chapter 9 - The Master Sergeant Awakens

Two days later, the sterile smell of the hospital was replaced by the warm aroma of chicken broth and pine cleaner.
We were in Room 412 of the St. Jude Veterans Rehabilitation Pavilion. Sunlight poured through the wide windows, illuminating the weathered, silver-haired man sitting upright in the adjustable bed.
Thomas Ross was seventy-one years old. He had survived two tours in Vietnam, shrapnel in his thigh, and a mild stroke three weeks ago. But today, his eyes were clear, sharp, and unmistakably those of a Master Sergeant.
"You handled the flank well, Captain," my father said, his voice deep and raspy, his hand resting warmly over mine.
"Learned from the best, Dad," I replied, squeezing his calloused fingers.
Eleanor sat on the other side of the bed, her head bowed in quiet contrition. Thomas looked at his wife of forty years. There was sadness in his eyes, but no hatred.
"You were blinded by a mother's guilt, Eleanor," my father said quietly. "You thought saving her from her own sins was love. It wasn't. It was poison. But Diana saved us. She held the line when neither of us could."
Eleanor nodded, fresh tears slipping down her cheeks, and reached out to grasp my other hand. "I’m sorry, Diana. For everything. For every time I made you feel second best just because you were strong enough not to cry. You deserved better from me."
"We move forward, Mom," I said, feeling a knot that had been lodged in my throat for twenty years finally begin to loosen. "One step at a time."

Outside in the corridor, Grant signaled me through the glass door.
I gave my father a quick kiss on his temple and stepped out into the hallway. "What is it, Grant?"
